mate it seems like the graphics card in the laptop has gone buggered and that bad news. altho it is not a known issue on dells.
firmly put some pressure on the top right handside of the laptop (not the screen) and see what happens.

im quite confident with laptops, what i'd so was blow some air into the fans and graphics card and try clean it out to see if it sorts it out. if it was totally buggered screen would have broken static but on the pic it seems equally spread out so i might be wrong. try cleaning the fan out and if you can clean the graphis card bit out.

ok mate do these lappys have a seperate graphics card or is it on board ive blown the fan out its clean but need to take lappy apart i guess to clean graphics card area i aaume thanks so far mate

just tried what you said about the screen but no change i turned off then on and it came up clear again and i got it to go to good known configuration and hit eneter but screen jst stays black so processor seems my bet damn

Try searching the net for "dell diagnostic disc".
I have one of these for latitude series and it helps when faulting a machine, but I don't know if this one would work with inspiron laptop's.

right

thw first job of the day is to plug in an external screen. I dont think you will get much but you might be lucky. If the graphics card is deaded you wont get anything out on a monitor If it does then you probably have a busted graphics controller. When you turn the laptop listen for the hdd counting the memory. This is called a power on self test or post. if you cant hear post you could have a busted cpu. Just bear in mind that on some laptops, post is silent. If you have gone through all of that then you may want to open it up and have a look. if after that you have a new doorstop, ebay is always good

ok used external lappy still get the same pic on that as i posted on here managed to reformat the hdd in this lappy and it was all fine rebooeted and started to go funny again i installed graphics driver still no go i do need to update the bios though the only driver for the bios on dell website is for 2005 please can someone point me in the right direction for a latest update for the bios on this laptop ive just dloaded the diagnostic drivers for it and will have a go tomorrow but as screen goes funny cant always see what it says bloody pain ive already had it apart cant see any probs with it as i say sometimes when it boots its perfect then goes funny again cheers so far peep

It looks like you gfx chip is overheating. You should be easily able to remove the keyboard on this model and have a look at how dusty it is.
- Remove the bezel above the keyboard, it should only be clipped in and should out with a bit of GENTLE persuation.
- This should expose the screws for the keyboard which you can remove.
- GENTLEY lift the keyboard, there should be a ribbon cable that connects the keyboard to the motherboard. Make a note of which way round it goes.

I think on this model, the GFX card is on a daughter board and not mounted on the motherboard.

It looks now as if you just need the correct vga driver.
Now the screen is working in a fashion, can you go the dell website, enter the service tag number and download all the correct drivers?

ive put in the vga driver and done all the updates but ive noticed that it has a old bios version but i cant find a newer one than whats on the dell website thats back in 05 does anyone know how i can flash the bios with a more update driver also screen seems to ok when running without power supply but when i plug in power supply it goes all fuzzy again can the power supply be spiking the motherboard or is there a bad earth and what i have found also that if the screen goes snowy and i change the settings from 1200 x 800 to 1024x728 its all clear again for a fair while and vice versa if it goes snowy again
