Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.

thanks for any help

Just an idea that might work have you tired to setup a new user account and then try go to the windows update that worked for me a while back.

Open Regedit by clicking your Start button Choose Run and type: regedit once it apears navigate to the following locations:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Internet Settings \ 5.0 \ User Agent

and

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Internet Settings \ 5.0 \ User Agent

Backup the keys to separate REG files.

Delete the User Agent key in the above two locations (if present)

By doing this, any overridden User Agent strings and tokens are removed, and the correct data is reported to a Web server.

Close Regedit and Re-boot your PC.

Little Info on what causes it mate, I hope the fixes i suggested help you out i know it can be very annoying when these type of errors/bugs pop up.

The cause of it means that your system is sending an incorrect data (about the Operating System) to the Microsoft Windows Update server. Windows Update uses the operating system information that the navigator.userAgent property returns to determine if you are running a supported operating system.

To test the User Agent string, open Internet Explorer and type the following:

javascript:navigator.userAgent

You'll see the Version, Platform information reported. The same data is reported to a Web server when you visit a website.

This problem may also occur if you access the Internet through a firewall or proxy that does not allow the Windows Update Web site to receive the correct HTTP user-agent request header ("HTTP_USER_AGENT") for Internet Explorer. Some firewalls or proxy servers may send user-agent information that is incorrect or difficult to nterpret.

hey thanks for that i typed the below in and it came up with Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0) what do i need to do so i can recive the updates ??

javascript:navigator.userAgent

Sounds like you have MozillaFirefox set up as your default browser only way i got around that was to remove mozilla completely and all its registry keys after that the updates worked.

Did you try the regedit fix i posted mate ? that works like a charm to if that works then there is no need to remove mozilla.

do you think it would be easyer just to find my recite out and go get it changed instead of messing around??

Didnt quite understand part of your post mate, If you mean Format the pc fresh install then yes thats one way to cure your problem but i would only do that as a last resort.

Receipt?

PC World won't take it back mate. Its a software problem and warranties generally don't cover software issues.

Do make sure you are using a flavour of internet explorer to visit the windows update site. It doesn't have to be set as the default browser but MS have written WGA to only work with IE.

(Yes, there are plugins to get Opera and Firefox to behave like IE for MS and certain internet banking sites, but its no hardship to use IE for a few minutes).

get my recite and go back to pcworld and get a better laptop

Ahhh i see what you mean now mate pcworld is one place i would never use my uncle got ripped off there a number of times and there tech guys are so dumb they take forever to fix simple little problems, but if your happy to find out your receipt and take it back they may offer to look into the problem for you im sure. BTW what OS are you running XP or Vista ?

It's your choice mate if your happy to take it back rather than try fix the errors your self it's all up to you i can only try help fix your errors you have to best of my knowledge mate.

Thats a nice easy way that muskrat has shown with pics nice one mate

Its a nice easy way to make IE the default browser for those who dont wish to mess with the registry settings.
