just got hold of a new game went to play it and found all mx cards wont
run on it because of some new rendering software the developers use
its supposed be very good and they say it will become the industry standard.

so looks like i need a new card
any suggestions best performance/best price sort of thing

The speed of your AGP is something to consider also, as all the newer GFX cards work with AGPX8.
Where your motherboard may only support X2 or X4 if its a few years old like mine lol.

Although I think some of the modern cards (not all) will work at X2 or X4, they will not be working at their full potential.
So may not be good enough to run the game when running at slower speeds.

If your motherboard supports AGP X8 then there should be no problems :)

This is happening quite a lot with new games I have a 128mb nvidia 440mx 8x agp it will not work prince of persia a game built for the nvidia chipset and a couple of others as Madbomber says Fx cards are the way to go

What's this?? A Nvidia weloveyou convention?
They had to fiddle thier drivers to get maximum scores on 3dMark, then the next set of Detonators were withdrawn cos they were crashing PC's and they have been trailng ATI performance for the past 6 months.
RADEON is the waytogo !
get yerself a nice 9600PRO or better if you got the cash to chuck around.

well went for the fx card and it does work but as diamond said system not quite upto it struggled a bit on skywalkers game earlier, but did'nt crash.

So looks like new board & processor which i was going to do anyway.
considering the Asrock K7S8X board as everybody seems to be raving about it
but not sure which cpu.

running an athlon 1.13gig at the moment so would like something around
1800-2400 athlon or duron any recommendations

excellent card

we are not saying they are the best just nearly all the games are all set up for nvideo cards.i have always used them and really have had no problems with them i have a geforce 4 .but i have had 4 games that wont run on it ..prince of persia the main one i wanted to work..all cards have there problems and have to have patches brung out with games companys..the problem is the games companys not the cards,

Just had to reply to this. Nvidia have had a lot of bad press surrounding 'cheating' in their newer driver sets, also theyre FX range (5200/5600) got some nasty reviews. The geforce 4 MX 440 is only a DX7 card, it does not have programmable pixel shaders and any games using these will not work with the card (Deus Ex Invisible War and Prince of Persia just to count 2). There is no patch to fix this problem and there never will be one, you cant patch something which is built into the hardware, unless you rewrite the whole game 'without' using programmable pixel shaders. Also even if you did get DE-IW to work with your MX440 it would run like turd to say the least (I have 9800 Pro and I only get 30FPS, poor coding apparently). The idea that most games are programmed to use nvidia hardware is NOT TRUE, the truth is that Nvidia pay the companies money to put their logo on the startup screen so they get recognition by gamers, which in turn increases their sales as people think the game will run better on their hardware. As far as im concerned and lots of online review sites, there has been no competition for the last 6/12 months between ATI/Nvidia. ATI wins hands down with faster DX9 performance and very good image quality. If you dont beleive this then just do some research online and you will see it for yourself. I say this from owning a 5200Ultra, 5600Ultra and also a 9500Pro, 9700Pro 'and' 9800Pro (I like my video cards!). If you want a decent card that is future proof with games like Half Life 2/Doom 3 etc etc then go for an ATI, if you buy an FX 5200/5600 then you will be very dissapointed when you cant play these games properly. My friend bought a 5200Ultra and gets 6fps in Doom3, gutted. Obviously everyones opinion is their own when it comes to this but its just some friendly advice :)

welll everybody to there own, but i have a fx5200 128b card and it runs fine on sof2 and on mohaa 125fps in sof2 no problem it aint the dogs but it does for me :)

Athlon 2400 at around £50 +vat would keep you up to scratch for a while, with 512 RAM - -and heres a little review of your board:

ASrock, a subsidiary of ASUS hopes to secure the budget sector to compete head to head with ECS which was rather successful with its low cost integrated solutions. With ASROCK joining the market, we will see another head to head competition for the market share.
(Related Reviews/Galleries : SiS 746FX Ref Board, ECS L7S7A SiS746 Mainboard, Iwill K7S2 Gallery)

ASROCK's K7 boards were previously based on earlier VIA chipsets but this has now changed as ASROCK K7S8X is based on a new chipset - SIS 746FX. If you have read our Reference board review of the SiS746FX, it is a good competitor to the nForce2 DC DDR chipset if low cost is the deciding factor in your purchase. In fact, in certain benchmarks conducted on the Ref board and another SiS 746 board, it even overtakes the Epox 8RDA+ based on the DC DDR in desktop applications and disk performance.

K7S8X has standard features as it aims to be a stable board with above average performance with a slightly lowly tuned ram timings. As the board does not come with important settings like RAS to CAS (2-2-5), it all depends on the manufacturer to tune it for maximum compatibility. Although this board does not have a multiplier control and voltage adjustments, the FSB range is amazing. You can choose from 100 ~ 248 at 1Mhz steppings.

This board has support for the following which are just enough for the normal user.

AGP slot – 1 AGP 8X/4X 1.5v slot
ASRock I/O – 4 default ready-to-use USB 2.0 ports (with one extra header, provide extra 2 USB2.0 ports)
1 default 10/100 Ethernet LAN RJ45 port
default Game/MIDI port, COM port, Parallel port, and Audio jack
5.1 channel 3D Audio
10/100 Ethernet LAN
6 PCI slots, PCI2.2 compliance

thanks for all the info guys
looks like more research and a rethink are needed.

just wish these game developers would get their act together
and all pull in the same direction.

otherwise i will have to stop buying their games. lol

gordy, I get what your saying m8 that card will be fine for those games depending on the rest of your spec, but they arent DX9 games. When you start trying to play them you will notice the problem. Of course, if you only play those 2 games youll be fine :)
