There is a hidden partition on his drive which contains a full backup of the original operating system.

Has he tried pressing ALT + F10 during the bios boot up?

If that doesn't work then he can unhide the partition using a drive tool like Partedit32 and enable the drive to be seen and bootable - sounds like he may have installed a new OS which has corrupted the original partition data.

ALT + F10 doesn't take you into the BIOS mate, it enables D2D backup.

Go into the BIOS and make sure D2D is enabled, then exit and press and hold ALT+F10 and you'll just follow the instructions.

If nothing happens when you press ALT+F10 then he has corrupted the partition data when he installed the new OS, but it's easily fixed using Partedit32.

Here mate, use this download, you will need it to reveal the hidden partition if the D2D trick doesn't work.

When you run the software you'll probaably find that his drive is split into 3 partitions called DATA, ACER and PQSERVICE, the one you are interested in is PQSERVICE (it's usually much smaller than the other 2 partitions - typically around 10Gb).

Change the TYPE from whichever number it currently is to 07 then save changes and reboot the laptop, if all went well then you'll have a new partition called PQSERVICE, so simply reboot and hold down ALT+F10 and you should now be able to enter D2D recovery. :)

so will i download the file Partedit32 is that the one ur syaing ?i shud have added this all started whn he was hit with the msn photo virus..

Sorry about that mate, for some bizarre reason Partedit took ages to upload even though it is only 138k! :)

Yes mate, use this file to reveal his hidden partition - but only if ALT+F10 doesn't work first of all.

BTW, he doesn't necessarily need to re-install the OS that came from ACER, he can isntall any old copy of Windows he likes and then just download the correct drivers from the Acer support site.

I bought an Acer 5051 which came With Vista Home preinstalled, I scrubbed it and installed XP SP2 :)

yeah a said that to him also about just using windows xp disc shud fix it,but for sum strange reason he wants his f10 mode back so as he can just do a recovery as he was used to that way.i dont know if he can still use his f10 recovery once a windows xp disc is installed on to his lappy?

That's what I'm saying mate, many times when you isntall your own OS the new OS will overwrite the original boot sector which contains the info for your hidden F10 partition, partedit32 will replair it :)

An alternative method to the above is to just grab a copy of XP Home (OEM), or XP Pro, depending what is installed on the Lappy, and then just boot the XP disc, and install Windows... And when asked for the Product Key, use the one found on the base of the lappy...

It's what I do, first thing I did on my Acer was delete the hidden partition to free up space, and install a clean XP that includes the software I want, not what Acer wants me to have...

It will need Activating again, but that's no drama...

cheers guys for the help on this matter ok wat we have did to lappy is that we have got shot of the nasty viruses cleaned up with many spyware proggies and stuff and al is runnin smoothly again, only problem he has now is that wen we went back to try and do a acer factory restore its asking for the password which we struck in and its not accepting it,is there a anyways he can get this acticated again is there factory set number for this . ps.he wont take the chance on a proper format nd fresh windows lol.
