Can someone help advise needed.

I am looking at getting one of these -

Only problem is I need a Serial port to use my Infinity Phoenix card programmer and to attach my Dreambox etc.

Is there a) an adapter for USB to serial that actually works 100%
b) another laptop around a similar price with a serial port built in

Or if you have any other ideas let me know please, perhaps an external serial port type thing ???

usb to serial adapters are never garaunteed to work

have you taken a look to see if it has a port replicator or docking station? that would normally have a serial port on it.

also, does this laptop have a pcmcia or pc card interface?

Is this a Serial port on it or is it for a mouse or something similar?

Serial port is normally a 9-pin 'D' Connector, on much older pc's can be a 25-pin connector. Some great info HERE

Looks like a S-Video and VGA Port to me. Not sure what they long thin one is, possibly an adapter for a floppy drive?

So if it has a Port replicator can I get a dock for it with a serial port on?

If it has a pcmcia port there are reliable adapters to be had. As long as its RS232 it should work fine in theory as its providing a true serial port.
