right guys im in need of some help asap.ive just bought a laptop for my daughter its not new before anyone asks.ive plugged it in and turned it on and it doesnt load up(xp)i keep getting choice from safe mode, safe mode with network, safe mode with command and restart as normal.it doesnt matter which 1 i press as it gets to the windows xp logo and then just shuts down it self.

can someone please help me as me and the wife have been having a massive fight over this problem as my daughter is getting upset.

What laptop is it m8?

Firstly can you take it back at all or is that not an option?

If it isn't it sounds like it could be a number of things ranging from hardware to software. Do you have a copy of Windows to do a fresh install? I'd try that first and see how the install goes....

If you have a windows XP CD try to run the repair function. But if it' a new laptop for you just format it and put on the programs you want. That way you can be sure it's free from viruses and spyware / keyloggers etc.

Good luck

Jock,

was the machine shut down correctly? start shutdown...? or did you just hold the power button down while switching it off...

Follow the clean install steps on this page.

If the laptop is shutting down during install, it suggests either:

1) a hardware problem with the laptop
2) a bios configuration issue

Might be worth going into the bios of the laptop and restoring the defaults and then try and re-install XP

Some Bioses also have error logs. See if there are any logs regarding hardware errors

sound to me like a heat problem
look for the air intake to the cpu
it will need a good clean

what is happening is the laptop is on fpor a bit and the cpu gets overheated and the laptop shuts down to save any damage

Can you go into the bios and check the temperatures fo the cpu and system, if its above 60 at idle you as DH says its probably a cooling issue. Check the intake and exhausts are clear and that the cooling fan on the cpu is free to rotate, also it may be worth checking the heatsink is firmly attached and renew the heatpad / grease. For extended use try placing the laptop on a cooling rack (Available from the kitchen if your wife bakes much) over a hard surface to allow free air circulation.

If this still fails, go into the bios and disable things like the modem, and lan as these can cause problems whilst installing.

Could also be a harddrive fault m8 too.By the way is it a partitioned hd? Maybe ur trying to install on to a small space of the partition.

right ive ended up buying another hard drive and installed xp from fresh on it but is still got a slight prob,if shes playing music via windows media and useing microsoft word at the same time the laptop shuts off without warning.ive had windows media running all day long with no problems at all but as soon as you get 2 programmes running it turns off?any ideas

Definatly sounds like a cooling problem with me. I have the smae problem with my current PC. Its running at 100oC at just the bios screen. I can see its full of dust but im too lasy to take it out. Tried hoovering it out lol but only got rid of a bit on the top. Currently the window is open ad the case is off to let as much air in as it can.

on start up try pressing either esc , delete or f2 mate it should be one of them just keep pressing the button as soon as you start it up :)

I agree, either memory issue or over heating

What make/model of laptop is it Jock? Some are known for cooling problems, and if it's a memory problem I may be able to help you out.
