Hi there,

Recently joined and the first advice/assistance received was fantastic so am back with a new question on a widely discussed topic (hopefully):

We're about to move house. We've cancelled sky as its a rip off and all their "deals" are heavily biased towards new customers and they refuse to entertain or support their existing customer base ( 10 years is obviously not long enough to qualify for discounts...?!)

so.... I've been discussing the strategy for using android box tech to provide us with a multi-room type setup akin to Sky Q, that offers the recording features of Sky+, with access to the typical internet services we have on our Smart TV. If anyone can be of any help I'm trying to get some advice on the following topics:

1. most reliable android system that allows multi-room and level of tech skill required to set it up and maintain.

2. are there any security implications for home network by opting for android box technology?

3. What speed of broadband should we accept as a minimum for optimum performance when streaming media from the Internet to the boxes?

I'll apologise in advance if I've not explained anything in enough detail - if so, please ask and I'll do what I can to elaborate.

thanks,

A.

A few points here.

1) IPTV on android is never going to be as reliable as Sky.

2) There are paid IPTV services that get around a lot of the reliability issues, but each account only allows you to watch one channel at a time - so no multiroom.

3) i dont know of any IPTV app that allows you to record

2Mbit minimum internet connection speed is required, 3.5Mbit for HD channels.

Thanks for the input guys, it's coincided with today's bombshell about the broadband in our new area - our fastest expectations are approx 3.5Mbit and the box we considered :
NerdTV v2.0 Media Centre | NerdTV- TV the Way it Should Be (that apparently offers recording and multi room) needs a minimum of 4 for SD and 10 for HD?! I think we'll have to lump it with freeview and smart TV until fibre arrives in the future...

If you look at it you are paying at least £50 per mox more than you would for a equivalent android box, this is for the sub, and if you read into the multi-room each box needs it own sub (which is covered in the multi room cost).

It good to know that there is a system that can record.

My problem is that this is a big expense initially for something that might be closed down in a month.

AS for your internet speed install Kodi on a PC then the addon Exodus and try seeing how it streams, if it works well you can get a android box for £25 that will run Kodi, will not give you live channels without hassel but will give you great movies and TV shows.

nerd box is way over priced, the same box on eBay can be bought for about £30. I bought a m8s mini 2 from gearbest for £28 and can't fault it. I have it hard wired and bought a paid sub ( £10 a month full package, 700+ channels) multi room options available, don't think they support recording though, but I could be wrong. Quality and reliability is better than kodi imo, I haven't really used kodi for a few months but still have just in case

£10 a month is £120 a year, would be far better off with card sharing even with a paid server you are only looking at £20 PA.

I really dont see IPTV the "cheap option" for some time to come, its far too easy so people will pay the £10 per month per box

They do a year for £75, which obviously still more than paid server but I'm happy with that for now

use a linux mag250 and you have stable iptv instead of android
