I have bought a type B Raspberry PI and I am looking for advise on getting it running with IPTV.

I would ideally like it to run with premier pass from New Zealand or something similar, this will be all it will be used for.

Has anyone done this?

Can someone explain how to do it including setting up the VPN.

Many Thanks

Have you already imaged it mate ?

If not first thing id do is install OpenElec I say openElec as I think its faster than the others then add fusion to download your repos etc. from.

when i connected it, it asked me to install an op system, from memory i installed raspbian, think these came with on the 8gb card that came with it.

try HERE mate , formatting tool for SD card, and image, once this is done download xbmc from HERE/ once you have installed xbmc, follow this THIS GUIDE and it will install the fusion installer , this in turn will give you the goodies, the more you use xbmc the quicker it will become

right, I have done all that, even checked 1channel and its working ok.

So next step. Premier league pass or something similar? Premier league will need a VPN as its only accessible from New Zealand.

Any ideas or recommendations for an alternative, it just has to show the premier league with English comm if possible.

there is sporting streams yes plugin but you have to be registered and you pay a small fee , but its full hd and really good, you have a few other streams on navi-x and mash up you have to search I think on mash up live tv, check nearer the time of the event

Sportsdevil addon is also a good and free option... but it as not the same quality of some mentioned previously.

i do not think you will be able to stream genuine sub sites like prem league pass aljazeera or nbc sports as these are done via browser and flash
and the pi does not support browsers like google chrome or firefoxyou can use ice weasel which is a version of firefox , but there is no adobe flash support for the pi same as no longer support for android and will be dropping support for linux soon as well you could try and use gnash which is an option but i think you may have problems .
as others have mentioned you could try the third party streams in the plugins via xbmc but do not think you will get a gen web browser sub working
there is a sub site called offside streams which has a plugin for xbmc costs about fiver a month do not use myself but others mite be able to comment on quality and eng commentry if they use it

I have found Raspbmc great and stable having tried Openelec and Rasbian first . The livestreams plugin is just the job for disparate web type streams.

Thought I would update this post since I have changed my mind. Having been quite happy with Raspbmc I got a bit frustrated when an upgrade they put out in the Autumn systematically wiped out each of my Pi builds, all based on clones of my Raspbmc based build (I use RPi-clone to make copies of my core build and the customise it for each Pi with the right IP, VPN keys etc). Worse still was RPi-clone started to fail once a fresh build had been created.

In frustration I created a similar config using Xbian and have not looked back since. A key improvement is their use of btrfs file system which feels faster - certainly on boot. It also seems less vulnerable to corrupting the SD card when the power is unexpectedly interrupted.

Rpi-clone works ok but there is a delay on first boot while it reformats from ext to btrfs. I have started creating a version of RPi-clone that creates a native btrfs copy but it got more involved that I thought - maybe one day I will finish it :)

i have heard a lot about this Openelec is this realy better?

Openelec has its fans but I am not quite so keen. The developers have a very specific approach to support which means they have completely locked down the OS. To me this seems to throw away one of the great aspects of open source software and platforms, that you can tweak and modify things and hopefully make a few contributions to the community project.

I wanted some different VPN software to work and could not install it because of the above restrictions.

It works well and is obviously stable, but then so are other locked devices like Apple TV etc.
