Hi.

I have an S9 Openbox. The last couple of days I've noticed that if I'm watching an HD channel, it's pretty much unwatchable. The screen is jerky, and the sound is way out of synch. I've also had to power off and on to fix whenever the sound just doesn't work on any channel.
Also, if I'm on an HD channel, the remote is very sluggish to move me up/down the channels.

Does anyone know what might be causing this?

Many thanks.

Hi James.

Is there some way to check/test the tuner?
The box has been working perfectly for almost a year now. It was ok at the weekend when I was watching the footy.

I've also run a Sat Scan this evening, but it had no effect.

Thanks.

Without actually buying a new tuner and swapping them over, I wouldn't know of any way to test it sorry mate :(

And things just go from bad to worse... In the words of Mario, "Why always me?".

I downloaded that S9 Firmware from the link in my previous post. I went into the menu and (perhaps stupidly) picked Factory Reset thinking that it would take it back to the first day it arrived with me and then all I'd have to do would be plug in a USB stick and Update.
Anyway, I formatted a USB stick to FAT32 and put the .abs file on it. Plugged it into the back of my S9 and the USB functions aren't available. Truth be told they display in white to choose from, but by the time I've gone down to select "Upgrade by USB" they've all greyed out. I know it's seeing the USB stick someway because when I take it back to the PC it has the "PVRSS2" folder created on it.

I've popped the lid on the box to check the USB port on the board, and it's not wobbly or showing any signs of damage. I've only used it about 6 times since getting the S9 last year, so I can't see how it would develop a fault all of a sudden.

Any help to resolve this would be greatly appreciated.

it's not detecting the usb stick for some reason.
you will have to upgrade via rs232 port.
I never do a factory reset.
the flash is 4meg,and the file is 4meg so everything gets erased/programmed in the flash chip anyway.

I used to have a Dreambox 500 so thankfully I still have the null modem cable from them days. Hopefully a reflash with the up-to-date image will resolve both problems. I'll keep you posted.

getting back to choppy, make sure your signal quality is up to snuff.
I have seen quality bounce around from time to time also.
It should be relatively steady.

the best firmware for a s9 is the september 2010 NM_HDS"_CMT_1010200755.abs no other firmware has any improvements for the uk market they are all for different countries so just flash that and you will get your usb back the firmware you have flashed is sort of locked to a satellite set up not of uk origin it needs you to go to satellite set up and untick all the selected sats then reboot and select 28.2e

Ok, so I let the dust settle and my blood pressure drop before I went anywhere near the box again.

One thing of note for anyone ever stuck in a similar situation when the USB port doesn't work. I was switching the box off and on with the switch on the back and the USB failed to recognise any memory sticks inserted. Just to humour myself, I switched it off at the back and then also switched it off at the mains plug. Left it 10secs and then switched it back on again, and hey presto the USB port recognises memory sticks.

So... it was easier to flash it back to the "OPENBOX_S9_110915" firmware. I'm just coming back to this thread now, so I missed your post edogg about sats until now.

Flashed the box and put the cline back on it.
No Sats were ticked, but I had Eurobird & Astra 28.2 and 28.5. I ticked both and ran a blind scan and after a fiddle about with SetEdit100 I have the channels. I'm may be doing things wrong, but it's a learning curve :)

My next question, which may or may not have something to do with my picking 2 sats. The "Now & Next" details for the majority of my channels doesn't show. Can I fix this easily or do I need to go back a couple of steps and get a single sat? (Reflash to the image from september 2010 NM_HDS"_CMT_1010200755.abs as mentioned in the post above?)
I remember that I used to have Eurobird&Astra as a "combined" sat on 28.2 whereas now they show as 2 options.

I should also mention that it would seem that reflashing the image has resolved the choppy image and sound cutouts. I've been watching HD footy all afternoon without a problem. Many thanks for the help on that score.

If I reflash back to a Sept 2010 firmware, will that bring back the problem of rebooting on certain channels or had that version addressed that problem?

Hi no you will have to sort the skysport hd channels that cause the reboot it is easy to do when on a channel that reboots remove the sat cable turn the box on and delete the channel from the favourites and repeat this until you only have the channels that cause the reboot in the sport favourite if you look on here you will find a sat list that has this already done it will be called TP_prog.dbs. just load that on a usb stick and choose menu>updateby usb>miscelanous files>tp_prog.dbs.
However if you are now happy with the performance of your box you can stay on the firmware you have because there really has not been any improvement of the firmware apart from one in november last year that gave a LAN connection to the box, but the usb method is still the safest way of adding stuff to the openbox
the epg is very bad usually changing up a channel and then back down while in the epg will fill missing info

Thanks edogg.

I've reflashed with the latest firmware since it was doing no harm and generated a EuroAstra sat on 28.2E. Scanned and got all my channels back :) Now & Next seems to be just a problem I'll have to live with. I've noticed that some of the duplicate channels have the N&N listings, so I'll just swap them into place whenever I can face sitting down to that task, lol.
