Well, you all seem to be VERY knowledgeable with the wii softmod so here goes...
Oh and I apologize ahead of time for asking something very obvious..
I have read a lot of tutorials including the ones here and am a bit confused..

I have a Wii v.4.0u Serial: LU53XXXXXXXX

1. Should I use Bannerbomb method or Preloader? I have read Bannerbomb is better

2. Do you HAVE to downgrade? I also read there is no need to downgrade to play backups with the Bannerbomb method.

I think I have read too much... lol and have confused things..

Here is what I have so far on my SD CARD:
1. Bannerbomb Private folder
2. HackMii installer renamed to boot.elf

I should run those first to get the channel installed right?
I haven't done a thing other than put those files there.. I just would rather measure twice and cut once with this..

EDIT: One more thing.... After softmodding, I should shut off the Wiiconnect 24? so it doesn't auto-update? Will this affect anything as far as gaming on it? I want to make sure to future proof things here.. Kinda like re-modding the xbox360 with the new firmware when microsoft updated to the new menu system...

Last Edit: my gf plays Animal Crossing and goes to other peoples towns.. Will she still be able to do this?

Thank you,
Jag

i'm no expert but you need to install HBC via bannerbomb then install the preloader via HBC and other stuff dependin gon what you want, preloader helps stop game updates etc via settings, as for animal crossing i dont play it but someone else might be able to help you with that

Thanks for the reply Seanicca...

hmmm... so, you can't just stop the Wii from running auto system updates?? I thought you could change that in the settings..

i guess my big thing is that the Wii function like is should with Wi-Fi... Like with Animal Crossing my GF can got from her town to others... Also Mario Cart connects over Wi-Fi and the Mario Cart Channel emails us with tourney dats...etc..

If making these changes to the Wii will not allow it to run as it should normally I am going to have to get another one and mod it..

I like to get my ducks in a row before changing anything on it..

once preloader is installed then you can change settings within preloader to stop the updates from games etc, as for wifi never tried but dont see why it wouldnt work cos i've installed internet channel and it works over wifi

Thank you everyone....

So, when you say game updates, do you mean like the Mario Cart Channel? and the WiFit Channel?? and not system updates themselves?

AND if a menu system update comes out, lets say v4.5, we will have to wait until the softmod files come out that support v4.5, correct?

Sorry for all the questions.... Whats funny is if it was my console alone I would have just done the mod by now.. lol

Thank you all again for your help on this.. I want to make sure I am avoiding spending another $200.00 for another Wii.. :proud:

The updates are system updates not the channel ones. if V4.5 can out you can just use WUM to take the update out and also preloader has a hack.ini which blocks disc updates

So, I took the plunge and followed this guide...
• View topic - Ultimate Wii Soft-Mod Guide (up to 4.0)

I will need to get some DVD-R's to see if backups will run... Everything ran fine.. I also did the "further" instructions.

Well, I now have the Homebrew and Play Backups channels. I will get some homebrew apps for testing as well.

Is it safe to say that if I have the backup channel I can play backups of my games?

Are there key strokes I can do to access the BootMii menu? (Is this Preloader?)

Just curious cause I tried reading up on it but couldn't find anything.. I have only seen the menu once..

First of all: Your Wii wont do any auto-update since it doesn't have it! You can set WiiConnect24 on. It is a good thing to block updates with Preloader tho.

BootMii and Preloader are absolutely not the same! BootMii will be in boot2 (or as IOS) and Preloader replaces the System Menu.
Your Wii will boot boot1 which well boot2 which will boot the System Menu. If you remove the system menu your boot2 will still work (BootMii if its installed as boot2). This would allow you to do allot of crazy stuff to your Wii since you can fix it with BootMii if you f*ck it up. Preloader will only rename the System Menu and places itself at the System Menu spot. The result is that boot2 doesn't load the system menu but loads Preloader since its in the System Menu spot. Preloader will load the System menu for you.
This means that if you remove the System Menu with Preloader installed you're screwed (since the Preloader dol with the sysmenu name will be removed) or if you install a system menu it will be gone. This is not the case with BootMii.

Another big difference is that preloader lets you apply hacks to the system menu. The main feature of BootMii is that you dont need any Ninty code anymore. No Sys menu and no IOSes are needed.

Scarfish.. Thank you VERY much for that detailed explanation of Preloader...

Cause to be honest.. I was TOTALLY confused cause at this point i haven't installed preloader and my unit plays backups and homebrew fine..

Except for My Sims racing.. I get the green screen or an error #002. i have tried installing the fix for the backup channel but no such luck.. Dunno what I have missed here.

Did you install BootMii (as boot2) or Preloader in the end? A bit of protection would be nice ;).

MySims racing is of the newer category 002 errors (sometimes called 002b). This game will check if the actual game is patched for this error. If so it wil fail to load. I think the Backup Launcher used is patching the games in a way which wont let this game run. I suggest using another Backup Launcher like NeoGamma. Of course you could also try USB Loaders which let you play your games from an external hard drive.

i got the green screen with mysims racing even with neogamma loader. its a strange on i think

Rev 13a and The latest neogamma R4 i think it is.

didnt see R5, must be new in couple of days

R6 is the newest, but did you try the 002 fix (or how its called) setting?

Everyone,
Thank you for getting back to me...

I installed:
BootMii as boot 2 (like I should)
CIOSv7.wad first then CIOSrev13b
I installed the Backup Loader Channel 0.3g and one with #002 fix

I just installed Neogamma r6 Channel

Now, Mario Super Sluggers won't work using the Backup Loader Channels but will work using the Neogamma with #002 fix on.

However, MySims Racing still throws a green screen (with Neogamma #002 fix on or off)
I have 2 copies:
1. Unpatched ISO burned to DVD-R
2. Patched a Backup of the ISO using Generic Wii Patcher and Wiiscrubber

Please let me know if anyone has a fix for this. I would rather not use an external USB Hdd.. Maybe at one point I will get one but not right now.

Any help getting this running would be greatly appreciated.
I would like to run this using a DVD-R.. Don't have the spare external hdd to run over usb..

Thanks everyone..

got this running using the USB. strange really. this time i used a fresh iso no brickblock or removing the update. this must of caused the problem for me

Congrats Madnlooney...

I dont want to spend the cash on an external drive right now.. Besides I get discs for like $0.10 each... I have priced external drives and there is no way I could get that low an amount with a HDD using 3-4gb's per disc...

Price per gigs are incredibly cheap these days but DVD-R's are cheaper.. :Mad2:

Oh well... Maybe someone will stumble upon this post and have some advice that will work for me.
