I have only one ethernet tracked in my wall from tv to corner of living room. I use a single cat6 hdmi balun to connect my sky box. I bought a 3 port hdmi switch so I can also use my firestick and dvd player. I can switch between inputs but devices cannot be used simultaneously. It also fails to work at times and have to power everything off and start again.

Is a hdmi switch the best option in this situation or is there something better, either way i need something new as switch is not even functioning as it should....

A switch or even an av amp. I use an avamp and am very happy with it. You would also have surround sound if you went down that route. Or feed more cat5/6 cables in and get a couple more baluns.

AV Amp or a decent switch. Search for Neet on amazon their stuff is good.

Will my single cat6 ethernet balun definitely carry 5.1 surround sound. I like the idea of the av amp idea as Ive already speaker cables tracked to all corners of room...

The cat6 wouldn't need to carry the audio as the amp will be before the cable. It would go sky / DVD / firestick in to the av amp then the av amp in to the tv via cat 6.

I would look in the richer sounds clearance section. I picked up demon av amp in there and saved £200 . The amp had been bought the box opened and then returned. The battery's had sent even had the wrapper taken off bargain.

a good balun will take care of the audio and the signal with the option to separate the audio.

One question is where are the speakers wires tracked to? Do they go behind the TV or to the corner of the room where your equipment is? This will make a big difference in the equipment you need. If behind the TV you will still need the matrix switch in the corner. If the speaker wires are already in the corner the an AV amp would be quick and simple, but as already said you must use a decent balun set.

WireStorm or Key Digital balun or switchers. If you want bulet proof try zekktor matrix, but $$$$$$$
