Evening all (i have done a bit of searching, but as i can't try it till monday, i thought i'd try and get some solid facts before i start)

A mate has acquired an old Iphone and it's on o2, but where he lives (out in the sticks) he can only get a signal from Orange, so needs it unlocked.

Is it possible to do this without paying? :)

Iphone Model- MB489B

Version - 4.2.1 (8C148)

Firmware - 05.15.04

Thanks :)

Unlocking an O2 iPhone and using it on a different network

Pay Monthly and Pay & Go customers

If you're a Pay Monthly customer, then you can unlock your iPhone at any time, for free. This doesn't affect your contract though – you'll still need to see out the rest of it. This policy may vary depending on your phone.

We won't be unlocking iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus for a while. We're prioritising our stock of these devices for customers who want to use them on the O2 network. The exception to this will be O2 Refresh customers who've completely paid off their Device Plan in full - we will therefore allow iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus to be unlocked.

To unlock your phone, just fill out this unlocking form and we'll do the rest.

Make sure you enter the mobile number that you bought the phone with, to avoid being charged.

Once we've got your form, it'll take up to 72 hours for us unlock it. Once it's unlocked, we'll text you to let you know. You can then put a non-O2 sim into the iPhone and connect it to iTunes. iTunes will then tell you the phone is unlocked.

Pay & Go customers

You can unlock your iPhone or any other brand of phone locked to O2. It costs £15.00 and we'll take this from your Pay & Go balance.

Once you have a balance of £15.00 or more on your phone, just fill out this unlocking form and we'll look after the rest.

We'll send you an unlocking code and instructions within 3 working days of receiving your form.

We'll text you to let you know when your phone's been unlocked. You can then put a non-O2 sim into the iPhone and connect it to iTunes.

just to add you must be the person registered to the iphone to be able to unlock it

you have to be the original owner/buyer of the phone .

they will not unlock without orignal owners details, as i found out the hard way.. :)

Cheers for the replies lads. I don't think he's the original owner/registrar.

Can it be done for free with some software? :)

I've downloaded the latest Redsn0w but when i run it, it seems to direct me to a folder for some update file (which i think i already have?)

Anyway, i downloaded an older version, i run it, i click the Jailbreak and install Cydia tab, it says "preparing jailbreak etc, patching kernel etc, then it says please select your options (install Cydia and enable battery percentage are ticked by default) i click next, and it put's me back on the Redsn0w startup screen??

I think i've sorted it? lol

Didn't realize i had to turn it off and go through the motions (holding buttons down etc)

After downloading Ultrasn0w via Cydia and installing, it's still locked down to o2. :(

I then discover that it needs to be on version 4.3.3 to be able to network unlock. I downloaded said version and try to install via Redsn0w, it goes through a few motions, sais waiting to reboot, but it just hangs there indefinitely. Hmmmm? lol
