hi guys just got a iphone 3gs on 02 would like it unlocked in order to use orange or even 3g after doing a few searches am i right in thinking when you jailbreak the iphone it is unlocked to all networks...

also can the 3gs running iso 5.0.1 be jailbroke easy......

You have to jailbreak and then use a program called ultra snow.
Also jb is available for 5.0.1.
If you have the older model there were 2. Then u can have a untethered jailbreak.
I bought an O2 iPhone 3GS and requested an unlock from O2 after using my contract sim in it and got it done free.
Pay as you go charge 15 to unlock.

if you have to restore your device , you will have to use ultrasn0w again, ive done 100`s of jailbreaks and unlocks mate, and to be honest 02 might do it for free and is then unlocked for good, even if you have to pay in the long run that will be the better option , especially in the hands of the wife lol

Also, just to add. If its after week 8 of 2011, the apple changes the hardware from Qualcomm to toshiba. To unlock the later basebands via ultra snow, you need to update the baseband with reds now. This is fine, and straight forward as long as you don't have the toshiba chipset. If you do, and you update you are now left with an iPod. The phone side of your iPhone is (for now) damaged beyond repair. You work out the manufacture date of your iPhone from the serial number of it. Do a google as for a description how. I've been on the Bombay sapphire and can't remember the exact digits to look at.

i have just downloaded redsnow after reading a diff forum where you jailbreak and install cydiaand you can semitether itwill this be ok

Yes m8. You can Jailbreak without any problems at all. In the absolute worst case scenario, you will just have to restore through iTunes. Installing cydia is free from danger really. Just stay away from the "update baseband", "install iPad basband", etc options. Obviously if you have a newer firmware on your iPhone ultras now is useless too.
You'll still be able to load all of the "free" apps though after jail breaking alone though.

Just to add, is there an untethered jailbreak for 5.01 publicly released? Thought it was still alpha. If not, read up on what is needed for a terhered jailbreak.

worked it out to be september 2009 3rd digit is year 4th and 5th are the week so does this mean i can update the baseband vie redsnow

Yes. If it at least >6 months old, then you will be good to go (obviously fro the serial yours is). Nowt wrong with updating the baseband, apart from that you can no longer use iTunes to update your firmware, or use the "reset" function within the iPhone. When updating the baseband, uncheck "install cydia". Redsn0w has a nasty habit of crashing whilst trying to do the deed if both "install cydia", and "update baseband" are checked together.

If the iPhone just sits at the apple logo far longer than normal, then you just need to jailbreak again.
