I have an old toshiba tecra a9, running xp. It needs to run Xp for me to use Volvo vida, this is a great for help with my car, i installed it years ago and all i remember it took me days.

I badly need to install windows 7 so i can run newer apps that require 4.5 net framework...

Can someone help me with installing xp and windows 7 split into 2 partitions and a bonus would be if there is a way to retain the volvo app, can this be backed up somehow?

Set up a dual boot. You would have to partition the hdd so it shows as 2 individual drives. Then install windows 7 on the new partition. When you boot up it should ask which version of windows you would like to boot in to.
I have done this before and have tried a couple of different tools to do this. Partition magic is one I think.
The proper / safe way of doing it would be to back up your existing os, format and partition your hdd and restore the os on one partition then install 7 on the other.
Ideally if you could get a copy of the software you are worried about that works on windows 7, then just have windows 7 installed and have everything on there.

You can make an image of your XP, then convert it to be compatible with virtualbox. Then just keep the files created, install Windows 7 and virtualbox and use the special image to have XP running in virtual environment.
