Hi I tried to post this earlier but it appears not to have gone through so hope someone can help please.

I am using Windows 8.1 and today some of my folders (see blow) reported as not being accessible.

Under All Users the folders
Application Data
Desktop
Documents
Start Menu
Templates

Under user/David Dutch Folders
Application data
Cookies
Local Settings
My Documents > Music .> Pictures .> Videos
Net Hood
Print Hood
Recent
Send To
Start Menu
Templates

All reported as not accessible.

I have tried System restore going back to more than one week to no avail and I know they were accessible up to yesterday as I was working on my computer.

I had to get rid of some malware and I think this may have also deleted some files just my thoughts and you know how thick I am.

If anyone can offer some helpful advice I would be grateful

Cheers

I would check for disk errors.

From a command prompt, type:

chkdsk /f

on the drive that you're having issues with.

Hi Spud1966

Many thanks for taking time out to try to help I have reduced account control setting and rebooted but it has made no difference still cannot access those folders.

Again I appreciate you trying to help.

Back to the drawing board and a bigger plea for kind help

regards

Within Explorer, can you right-click on one of the folders you can't access and click on Properties. The Properties for that folder should be displayed and you should have a Security tab at top which if you click on will display a list of groups/users who have access to that folder. What is listed?

On mine I have 'Authenticated Users', 'System' and Administrators. As I'm Administrator then it states I have "full control" over my folder.

Have you tried lowering the user account control settings slidebar?

Have a try of this m8

How about trying to access in safe mode!

Or

Right click on cmd and run as administrator, can you access the folders

Or

Create another user as administrator and see if it can access the folders

Hi netpalmer

Thanks for trying to help I thought that I had gained access tot he folders but tonight on trying to Boot up I got the error message
Main Message Window NvBackend.exe Application Error
The exception unknown software exception (0xc0000417) occurred in the application at location 0x00542717 - Click OK to terminate the programme

I have used system restore and am back on Windows 8.1 but get the message from Kaspersky - Failed to start system watcher
When trying to load word I get - Word cannot create the work file Check the temp environment variable

When I click OK the file opens?

Excel eventually opened the files I selected. But if I try to open Excel from the command button it just keeps on starting....

Outlook gives the error when trying to load : Cannot open your default e-mail folders File access is denied Your do not have permission required to access the file c:\users\david dutch\documents\outlook files\[email protected]

Looks like i have a bit of a mess. The folders that would not open all open now and the content is available.

I have not got a clue what this means.

help is needed and would be greatly appreciated

cheers
