softwareforstudents key!

Got a windows 7 professional x64 software key a while back.
installed OS a few times since then and all been good.

installed asus ai suite 2 and been having problems since and cannot get rid of it completely so have decided to do a fresh install.

my original clean dvd of win 7 is now showing up as faulty and wont run so i tried the digital life downloads which now take you to microsoft.
before you can download a new copy of windows you have to put in your key and pick language , your key is then verified with microsoft
but an error shows up that key is not for that language version(English) and wont let me download.

has this been the reason that softwareforstudents was cheaper?

has anyone had the same thing?

can i select a different language and change it to English?

after some reading it seems that i had an upgrade key fully legit but now that MS have removed the digital river downloads
you have to input your key to download clean copies but upgrade editions are not included in this(hence why key is flagged as invalid language) and you have to pay
MS for the media(don't know how much).
