Guy's I have an old Compaq desktop computer running on windows XP. I use it occasionally because it has my music and certain files on it. My problem with this is when I click on the home page for Google it will not load. I am running this computer through Norton anti-virus software. When I click on Norton nothing happens it says it is inactive???. I thought it maybe an antivirus software problem so I decided to go in Add/remove programs to try and remove it but it will not remove it. So it appears certain commands are not responding but everything else works fine. Can anyone think of a fix for this problem for me please?. :(

should go back to whatever restore dates you have given it

It could be last Month when it was working ok Mr drob will it go back that far?.

Just have a look at what restore point dates are available Mr. Miggy, if you haven’t been making your own ones when the system is working well.

No not tried that m8. It boots up normally when I switch it on. It's just not responding to certain commands ie Google, Norton, add remove.

Ok, but boot into safe mode as HimHer suggests and try again.

(Not relevant to your problem, but why on earth are you useing bloatware like Norton?)

Norton used to have a good reputation once upon a time, its only because there are far better ones today that they lost their reputation.

Norton has been working fine for me for years. I guess old habits m8. :)

From Safe Mode you stand a better chance of removing Norton which is the most likely cause. If Norton is the problem a Restore Point will very likely not fix the problem.

If the problem goes away then install the free version of Avast although, to be fair, malware and browser exploits are more prevalent than any virus these days.

I have managed to dump Norton as advised. It now has Avast on it but my goodness it has a list a mile long for updates now. What the hell was I paying Norton for? Why so many updates now Avast is on.

A wee tip for using Avast. Select the "silent gaming mode" option. It turns off annoying audible alerts.

It's also worth installing Malwarebytes if you don't already have it.

3 more updates now and that should cure it. 10 items were outdated. Would you believe it?. :(

Hi Miggy

Norton is the devel to get shot of by normal methods if you used control pannel in windows half of it is still there, even your-uninstaller 7 struggles i would advise running this tool from norton themsleves to totally flush.

Thanks I will have a go later that computer has done my head in today. All my files were all showing signs of being infected. I find this hard to believe that it got to that state with Norton running in the background.

get some decent security i run Eset smart security 9
malware anti exploit hitman pro 3 alert also have few additions to hosts file to secure lol
malware anti malware pro

never have an issue & i visit loads sites that may be iffy

Norton seriously??

I've had these symptoms with Norton myself and found the only surefire way of removing Norton was with there removal tool mentioned above, worked a treat and sorted my browser.

Lucky enough no issues seem to be showing up with Norton. I used to have Norton 360 on it and that was a beetch to get off.the Norton that I had on before I removed it was a very basic cover and seemed to remove quite easily. I hope that is the end of Norton now we can only hope it's gone now.
