I have an issue with Google on Chrome, I am running Windows 7 (32bit) and recently found that when I search within the address bar it always reverts to google.ro? I have tried all the usual fixes, setting my location (I am in Spain), it even says at the bottom of the search page 'your location Spain'.

In Settings I have set the search to google.co.uk/ncr but it simply ignores it and reverts to .ro, all the searches come up in English so that's not an issue, but every time I go to Amazon it asks if I want the Italian site?

I have just bought a new laptop running Windows 8.1 (64bit) and that does exactly the same!!

I have tried it with and without a VPN and it makes no difference, therefore I assume that something has been changed in the registry?

I also have IE11 installed and that searches google.co.uk no problem by default.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Have you tried swapping the default omnibox setting to say bing then try that, then swap back using the default google.com using the drop down.....

Add /ncr after your Google url i.e. google.co.uk/ncr (no country redirect) or change it in Chrome Settings.

I have tried this already, it seems that Chrome totally ignores these settings?

Anyway, I have identified the problem to the VPN, changed my VPN location from Hampshire to London and guess what? No .ro however, it has reverted to Google.es but I can live with that.

One thing puzzles me though, if a VPN makes you 'appear' to be in a different country, how does the computer know your true location? For example, speedtest and whatsmyip both report my location to be in the UK, however, at the bottom of the Google search page it reports my location to be in Spain? I assume this must have something to do with my Google account?

Not all traffic necessarily goes via the vpn. For example, if there is no route via the vpn traffic goes around it.
