It's more fun to build yourself yet its less hassle to have It done for you.
Many sellers like dell etc let you build your own computer choosing your own specs..
Buying one ready to go gives you the cover from dodgy parts etc..
I'm a bit of a computer tinkerer but there are now some great deals on naked desktops you just install an OS on it yourself and that's a piece of cake...
Figure out your budget first otherwise you'll get drawn in by the shiny toys

Good point and go for one without an OS much cheaper..
You can get a cracking set up for that amount..are you in the UK?
And what sort of spec are you wanting?

i would always go custom build and choice the bits i wanted dont be sucked in by a per build machine using the cheaper end bits
yes cpu, ram and hd size might be the same but pc's need a good board if ye get the board right then thats half the battle
but also look at second hand machines as ye my get a pc that you could be worth anything upto 1200 for your budget
would also look at what spec a good hackintosh is as then you can duel boot osx and windows

The PSU is the heart of the machine don't go cheap on that

This old piece of crap is like Triggers Broom it's been fettled so much over the years. I don't want a full on games machine but something for the odd game, reliable with expansion options for the future.
I know I can get a run of the mill machine for a bit less but as I have the cash for the first time ever I thought I would get myself something half decent.

I have done both, self build and bought on line as well.
Tbh nowadays it is probably cheaper to have one built to your spec online. My last tower was built to my own high spec and delivered for less than I could have bought the components for, especially when you consider the cost of buying the os.
