I'm toying with the idea of a new laptop, must of had the current laptop 5 years or more Id say (Dell Inspiron 1764) been a great laptop as it goes but showing signs of wear etc

I'd like to stay with same or higher spec (Higher I would imagine due to age of mine)

I have i5 2.27ghz, 4GB Ram, 1TB HDD, 17" Screen

i5 ... whats the same alternative with say AMD ?

was looking at the HP Pavilion 15-p199sa <<
but the installed bloat puts me off
was leaning more towards a Lenovo

Any advice welcome :)
Thanks for looking

As per thread in mods room re Lenovo. There could be a inherent fault on them re graphics chip and windows 8. I will update you on mine when it gets back from repair

pc world are selling an acer with I7 @ £499, 4th gen I7 one tb hdd and 8 gb ram at £499. John lewis where selling a levono Z50-70 with I7 4th gen at £549 with 1tb Hdd, 8gb ram but with a dedicated video card at £549. Check out the battery life on the lenovo's only to 4 hours the acer is up to 7 hours. Dell have just brought out their inspirons with 5th gen I series.

How much toot on a HP lappy have on them ? easy enough to clean off ?
that is good spec for the money from what I can see when browsing

I've been and had a look at that laptop rat not a bad spec but I think you could not get that spec on anything other than the blue or purple of something. I was not sure on the intel iris graphix. Go and have a feel of it, when you put it next to some of the acers of more expensive hp's you'll see the difference in build quality. My son has a a8 lenovo and there very sharp plastic around the edges.

Thanks for your advice @kegnkiwi :)
I have had a Acer and liked it very much
but saying that this Dell has been a top notch Laptop and apart from a new HDD has not let me down

Will keep looking and taking any advice thrown into this thread :)

The i7 probably has more cores @Rat, and if for some application it uses only one it will probably run it faster.

I think that quoted speed is when all cores are in use.

I think that the older version of the acer for £549.00 availabe at both currys and laptops direct. You get an older chip but get touch screen. You can tell by the chip number after I7.

The acer touch screen is the I7 4500u
NX.MC0EK.001 | Acer Aspire V5-573P 4th Gen Core i7 8GB 1TB 15.6 inch Touchscreen Windows 8 Laptop - Laptops Direct

The pc world one is faster Its a I7 4510U

Dell have the 5th gen which should be faster.

I just recently replaced a sick, but not very old Acer i5. I had already decided I wanted an i7, more for future-proofing than anything else, I don't do anything particularly aggressive with it, and I had narrowed it down to a choice of 2- an HP Envy or a Lenovo (both from John Lewis)- the Lenovo had a hybrid HDD, the HP had more RAM and touch-screen. I plumped for the HP, and I am very happy with it, as a bonus the 'Beats' sound is actually quite good considering. However, I find I never use the touch-screen, and so perhaps in retrospect the Lenovo may have been the better choice.
Re. the HP's bloat, I just installed CCleaner & disabled the useless stuff from starting up- thus leaving it intact in case it should ever come in handy. As if....

Can you opt for a business supplier @Rat which may be able to supply with no OS. Just say you want to put Linux of some form on it.

Also drawn to a touch screen, these 2 seem decent and spec is nigh on the same

Five years ago, Microsoft released a brand new and revolutionary operating system that sought to end the days of windows xp With nearly half of the computers in the world running windows 7, it’s pretty obvious that Microsoft fulfilled that plan.
If you are running on a Windows 7 machine,Microsoft announced yesterday that mainstream support for the operating system ended yesterday January 13, 2015. Mainstream support contains free online and phone Microsoft support for third party application crashes as well as adding new features to the operating system.
In March of 2013, Microsoft stated that Windows 7would no longer be receiving any more service packs and the operating system was stable enough to continue without updates, and two further trouble-free years use with nearly all businesses running windows 7 on their machines, confirms this.
Don’t panic if you’re still running on a Windows 7machine, it won’t break today or tomorrow or the next day. Microsoft places a ten year support life on their software, with five years being mainstream and five years being extended.

Windows 7 will be placed into extended supportuntil 1/4/2020, meaning users will receive security updates and nothing more, which is generally good enough for the basic user. “Patch Tuesday”, the secondTuesday of every month, will continue until the end of extended support.Businesses of course can always pay for software support on Windows 7.
The new Windows 8 and upcomingWindows 10 operating systems include a different look and feel, but aregenerally a good step in the right direction. With Windows 7 on the same pathas Windows XP, we will still be seeing multiple machines running this five years old operating system for many more years to come.
