Many shoppers in England will have to pay 5p for plastic carrier bags from Monday in a bid to slash the 7.6 billion handed out every year.

England is the last part of the UK to start charging for bags.

Shoppers at all supermarkets and large shops will be required to use their own bags or be charged for plastic bags.

Environmentalists have welcomed the move, but have called for a more comprehensive scheme that includes all retailers and all types of bags.

Retailers with 250 or more employees must charge at least 5p for the bags they provide for shopping in stores and for deliveries, but smaller shops and paper bags are exempt.

Free bags will still be provided for consumers buying uncooked meat, poultry or fish; prescription medicine; certain fresh produce such as flowers or potatoes; and unwrapped ready-to-eat food such as chips.

The exemptions mean the move may not be as successful as schemes introduced elsewhere in the UK, campaigners say

even the local chinese/indian up here have been charging for over a year now not just the big retailers

yes all corner shops and local shops will love this charge around here

They should be more concerned with the plastic that most foods are wrapped in, but the bag charge hasn't changed my shopping habits I just pay the 5p in put the empty bag under the sink with the outhers up here in Scotland i think it's been a year since the charge came in, I would ban all plastic bags and offer cotton bags at £1 free over £25 spent

It has worked for me, for the past few months I've been keeping the bags in the boot of the car and use them from there

post clocking will get you a free bag

How about making the bags worth the 5p asking price?. They are like tissue paper and break very easily. I don't mind paying for something that is fit for purpose otherwise they can stick it.

The point is getting rid of plastic bags in fact plastic all together, just making bags thicker won't stop the environmental damage its causing or caused, I always keep in mind that plastic was invented less than 50 years ago and for 1000s of years we survived with out it and can again, but the way we abuse the planet we won't make another 50 years, too little to late

I should have said used in every day production 50 years ago ie bottles, food storage, bags ect either way its still messing up the planet and we should be doing more to limit its use

will never happen due to cost
never to change

It's going to take more than abolishing a plastic bag to save the planet fella. lol Try working on World peace instead.

Lol yea im sounding like a tree hugger here

I witnessed something similar to this in North Africa some years back

I don’t know how they got there but most of the bags had the Tesco label on them
