Nelson Mandela has died

Anybody else getting fed up with all this eulogy crap ? He's dead, just like the rest of us will be one day, that's it !

He may have done some good in a country half a world away, and very little to do with us, but the inequality he "fought" against remains,
just between rich and poor, instead of black and white.

Why did most of the worlds leading politicians and media, need to go on an apparently never ending "jolly" ?

I suppose sending a bunch of flowers was out of the question ?

BTW, I forgive everyone for anything ever. Seemed to work for him !;)

Long way round saying most people are twats, I'll just trim me hedge ;)

Wouldn't go that far, just most politicians, seems to be a job requirement.

They all claim to have "drawn inspiration" or some such, from Mandela for many years etc etc.

Cameron and Obama wanted to bomb peace into Syria, until the House of Commons finally earned it's pay.

And everywhere you look the world is free of racial tension and war ?:err:

They're all a waste of skin, of whatever colour !:bangshead:

Right I will retract some of my statements above after havering a good discussion with one of my South African engineers yesterday. But I will not repeat what he said about his ex wife!

He is about 37 but that is irrelevant as he is from the country.

Given that he's a native of the country, and was in his teens at the time Apartheid ended, I would think that his opinion is more relevant than some of the uninformed cr** we've seen on this thread tbh.

As above it is relevant about his age (disagree with the crap statement ) as it would have significant impact on what he thought about Mandela, Also his heritage/background would have an great impact. i.e. British or Boer.

I disagree Shaun, and for once I agree with @nara.

The fact that he was born and brought up there, as were his parents I would believe his views rather than anyone in this forum.

@MH thats up to you Pal you have spoken to the guy , he has given you an opinion and you have listened and now changed your opinion, that is your choice and I respect that. But I am of an older generation than your engineer, I too was born, schooled and lived in Southern Africa in countries such as Northern Rhodesia (Zambia,) Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and S.A. I have an opinion on the ANC, ZANU, etc which will also differ from most if not all members on here, But as you say you believe his views because he lived there etc well I also lived in it, many of my friends died in it. So I too have views albeit different to his maybe, but I think although our views may be different we are entitled to our different views because we have both lived in it.

My point about age had he been older than 37 his opinion may have been different to what it is.

South Africa is still very much a divided nation. The views of one person from the country are relevant, obviously, but it would be dangerous to assume they reflect a majority.

I won't be taking Peter Sutcliffe's advice on Leeds/Bradford nightlife any time soon despite the fact he was born there :)

But I would rather listen to someone who was born and raised in said country and Shaun rather than you.

All I am going to say us that my initial view has softened. But I do take into account one mans hero is another mans terrorist.

@MH you have heard the opinion of someone from South Africa and as you say it has softened your view, which is a great thing because it means you have taken into account something that you feel is important despite the fact it was different to your original view.
I also realise that to some HimHer's statement may sound flippant, but basically he is saying that people whoever they are and whatever they are will have different opinions of what is happening around them because situations affect people differently and during apartheid (which in my mind was and still is wrong !) there were probably some in South Africa, black, white or whatever that never actually felt that it affected them possibly because of where in the country they were or even who they were with.
However, there were many others irrespective of their ethnicity who were greatly affected because they will have witnessed the atrocities that were carried out by either pro or anti apartheid movements and their view will be affected by how it impacted on them and that will affect how they feel about the way Nelson Mandela is now being portrayed.
My own view is that he was responsible for some terrible things, but he has also been responsible for some wonderful things and it is great that many of the great things he achieved are celebrated but nor should what occurred in his past be erased from history and everything be made out to be so wonderful.
