Actor Reeve had become an advocate for spinal cord injury research
Actor Christopher Reeve, star of the Superman films in the 1970s and 80s, has died.
The 52-year-old had been suffering from an infection as a result of a pressure wound and died on Sunday, his publicist Wesley Combs said.

He had suffered a cardiac arrest at his New York home and slipped into a coma, Mr Combs added.

Reeve was paralysed nine years ago when he broke his neck after being thrown from a horse.

Millions of fans

He had become an advocate for spinal cord injury research.

In recent years, he had regained sensation in some parts of his body.

He had also returned to acting, appearing in a 1998 production of Rear Window, a modern version of the Alfred Hitchcock thriller about a man in a wheelchair who becomes convinced that a neighbour has been murdered.

The one true superman has been taken from us but your red cape will fly again

The role won him a Screen Actors Guild award.

Reeve's wife Dana said in a statement: "On behalf of my entire family, I want to thank Northern Westchester Hospital for the excellent care they provided to my husband.

"I also want to thank his personal staff of nurses and aides, as well as the millions of fans from around the world who have supported and loved my husband over the years."

Riding accident

Reeve was a virtual unknown before he shot to superstardom in the 1978 blockbuster Superman.

Thanks to meticulous preparation and close physical resemblance to the comic-strip hero, producers gave him the part.

The film and its three sequels turned Reeve into a worldwide star and grossed $300m.

Reeve broke his neck in May 1995 when he was thrown from his horse during an equestrian competition in Culpeper, Virginia.

It is probably best for him, in the condition he was in.

It would not have been easy for him and his family to live like they way they had to:)

still sad though

thats really bad,i actaully thought he was on the road 2 recovery

I saw an interview this morning he did before his accident. he was playing the part of a paralised cop. He was saying how awful it would be for a 6'4" man looking at the world from 3' high on a wheelchair. Soon after he had his accident. It must have been a very sad 9 years for a very active man. As MH said it's probaly best for him to go now. peace at last

You know I've never ever worried about death, but the thought of being completley paralised as a quadraplegic like Christopher Reeve terrifies me, as MH said he must be better off, I know I would want an early end if I was ever in that posistion (please god never) I don't think anyone can completly understand what that must be like, shame he seemed a nice bloke :(

I really thought it was a cruel joke at first as i didnt get to hear about it till I was at work....cant believe it has been nine years since his accident! Very Sad loss! :(

Bad news.. Good comment on him going.. best for him.. My uncle got Alziemers before he got really bad him and my dad went on the moores and found a cliff.. My uncle begged my dad to throw him off or drive the car off the cliffe.. my dad said no.. at the end of his life he couldnt do nothing for himself.. he was like a baby.. i remember my mum saying.. hes better off now. But it is true though.. we dont let animals suffer.. i wouldnt like to suffer.. infact i would want to take my life if i was like him.. he was a brave man.. very brave.
