PlayStation 3 'hacked' by iPhone cracker

By Jonathan Fildes
Technology reporter, BBC News

The hack involves hardware and software
A US hacker who gained notoriety for unlocking Apple's iPhone as a teenager has told BBC News that he has now hacked Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3).

George Hotz said the hack, which could allow people to run pirated games or homemade software, took him five weeks.

He said he was still refining the technique but intended to post full details online soon.

The PS3 is the only games console that has not been hacked, despite being on the market for three years.

"It's supposed to be unhackable - but nothing is unhackable," Mr Hotz told BBC News.

"I can now do whatever I want with the system. It's like I've got an awesome new power - I'm just not sure how to wield it."

Sony said it was "investigating the report" and would "clarify the situation" when it had more information.

'Open curiosity'

Mr Hotz said that he had begun the hack last summer when he had spent three weeks analysing the hardware.

After a long break, he spent a further two weeks cracking the console, which he described as a "very secure system".

He said that he was not yet ready to reveal the full details of the hack but said that it was "5% hardware and 95% software".

The hack could allow gamers to play pirated games
"You can use hardware to inject an insecurity and then you can build on that," he said.

He admitted that he had not managed to hack the whole system, including the protected memory, but had worked out ways to trick the console into doing what he wanted.

Mr Hotz said that he was continuing to work on the hack and, once finished, would publish details online in a similar way to his previous iPhone exploits.

In particular, he said, he would publish details of the console's "root key", a master code that once known would make it easier for others to decipher and hack other security features on the console.

He said his motivation was "curiosity" and "opening up the platform".

"To tell you the truth, I've never really played a PS3," he said. "I have one game, but I've never really played it."

Opening the system could allow people to install other operating systems on their console and play homemade games, he said.

In addition, he said, the hack would allow people to play older PS2 games on their consoles.

Recent versions of the PS3 do not have the ability to play PS2 games after Sony controversially removed a piece of hardware.

He admitted that it could also allow people to run pirated games.

"I'm not going to personally have anything to do with that," he told BBC News.

Gaming firms do not take the issue of game piracy and console modification lightly. Recently, Microsoft disconnected thousands of gamers from its online gaming service Xbox Live for modifying their consoles to play pirated games.

Mr Hotz said that the nature of his PS3 hack means that Sony may have difficulty patching the exploit.

"We are investigating the report and will clarify the situation once we have more information," said a Sony spokesman.

Mr Hotz rose to fame in 2007 at the age of 17 when he unlocked the iPhone, which could only be used on the AT&T network in the US at launch.

The hack allowed the popular handset to be used on any network.

He has since released various other hacks, allowing people to unlock later versions of the popular handset.

:roflmao: I said that to my wife about 20 minutes ago..

Good time to buy a PS3 then ey! Shameless plug but look at my sig lol

Does this mean the BluRay format has been hacked and films can be copied as well?

munkey... m8...

you just stick to taping the charts onto a c90 ;)

Ahh Sunday afternoons, Capital Radio chart show, finger on the pause button, them were the days.

even if this is goood news hav u seen da size of som of them ps3 games bout 15gb or 20gb. Downloading and transfering them onto sort of hdd mod launcher would take 4eva. I mean gbatemp have reported dat the new final fantasy is 40gb in size for ps3. 32gb movies and rest is game mechanics. Maybe if they release som sort of ps3 scrubber to scrubb these games. I am pretty sure ther is already a way to transfer blu ray movies on to ps3 hdd.

I was referring to disc to disc copying, old fashioned hard copies :)

Come on munkey. I thought you were the AV king?!

Blu-ray has been hacked for donks, and PS3 blu-ray disc images have been up for download for ages (with no way to play the games as of yet).

Blu-ray burner plus £1.50 a disc for a BD-R and you are good to go.

But to be honest, apart from traders, disc based technology is going to take a back seat to digital downloads and hard drive streaming. Look at console hacks (all have hard drive based backup playing facilities -the PS3 will follow, unless the guy is assassinated).

My mate (who I have just set up a PS3 for) is happily downloading blu-ray rips to his hearts content, and streaming to his new plasma through his PS3.

No need for silly discs.

:EDIT: I am bit of a nob myself. Quote taken from eurogamer

Completing the puzzle is the file system encryption on the disc itself. While PS3 game dumps are as old as the system itself, they are almost entirely useless and a complete waste of internet bandwidth for those that have been uploading and downloading them - the dumps do not contain the encryption keys apparently hidden in Blu-ray's proprietary ROMmark copy protection system, which remains inaccessible. While Geohot's hack potentially opens the door to piracy, in any eventuality, games would still need to be heavily patched to operate without the encryption even on a compromised system.

So yes PS3 images have been ripped, but someone needs to figure out the patching of images, or some other clever way of fooling the decryption handshake before games will run.

Very early stages, but very exciting.

If that's right then the 360 version's got to be multi disc like Mass Effect 2. Also there's MGS4 and Uncharted2 which I'm almost certain take up the full bluray disc capacity as well. Even older games like the original Uncharted I can right easily see taking at least half the disc.

So yeah, basically the best games will be huge downloads either way we slice it, unless uber compressed. Which might be an idea in this case.

I could download 15 - 20 Gb in less than 1 1/2 hours, i wouldnt be able to get to town, buy a ps3 game in gamestop in that time.

My PS3 is still MIMB so I wouldn't have the faintest what it can do. So far as streaming 1080p content, it just can't be done seamlessly without a HTPC connected directly to a display. On the rare occasion that I sit down to watch a film I don't want to have to troubleshoot why my jumbo packets aren't delivering 1080p over a network.

It's all that faffing about with encode,re-encode, rip and burn that I'm trying to avoid. I want one of these but for BR's

I've got a 7TB media server but it consumes way too much electricity and although I'm running Raid6, two or more hard drives could fail which would wipe out the last 5 years of downloading and my entire movie collection.

I've downloaded BR 1:1 copies but a few of the files gave problems with lip sync, whilst most originals were a lot better but still had the odd issue. I hate messing about setting up different lip sync speeds for different file formats and films, I just want to sit, relax and hopefully watch a decent film.

I want a BR deck that I can hit play on one side and record on the other, that'd be cool, then you'd have me sold. In fact a streamlined PC solution would suffice for now.

Damn I sound like Veruca Salt.

15-20gb in around 2 hours ? you on a 50mb connection then.....this is the thing most people aren't so it's definitely quicker for them to go out and buy what they want if time is the only factor and I think that's the point we're both making. I guess there's people out there that don't fancy downloading anywhere from 15 - 40gb on just the one PS3 game which they will then need to burn using specialized burners. That's why I ask if it's really worth pirating for considering it's costing you regardless and people will be doing a shitload of downloading just on 1 game. But then again saying that there's people waiting in line for this opportunity to arise.....

That's me munkey. I knew you were a geek.

I have set up and seen very good results with PS3 media server (with the right settings), hardwired over a 100mbps network (MKV, .m2ts, etc.)

But yeah, if you must stick to optical media, you can burn BDR's no probs.
