The UK is experiencing its worst storm weather this year, as 80mph winds cause flooding and damage across the country.

The gale force conditions and torrential rain which battered the UK last night are set to intensify today, according to the Met Office.

The Environment Agency issued flood warnings after heavy rain left people stranded in their cars, while winds in excess of 80mph have brought down trees, power lines and damaged property.

Fire crews and Devon, Somerset and Bournemouth have been called out with reports of roofs being blown off properties and in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, people had to be rescued from four units on an industrial estate after flood waters rose to two feet.

In Wales, widespread flooding of the Pembrokeshire roads trapped people in cars and coaches. Firefighters had to use a boat and a Land Rover to rescue a woman stranded by floodwater at Milford Haven.

In Dorset, five people, including a pregnant woman and two small children, had to flee their car when it was enveloped by rising water at Whitchurch Canonicorum, near Bridport.

The Environment Agency has issued 28 flood warnings - 18 in southern England, six in south west England and two each in Wales and the Midlands.

There are also 98 lower "flood watch" alerts across England and Wales and 13 in Scotland via the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.

In coastal areas tidal flooding has not been as severe as expected, however the rough seas have disrupted channel crossings this weekend.

Brittany Ferries cancelled sailings from Plymouth to Roscoff and Poole to Cherbourg because of the severe weather, while the SeaFrance crossings from Dover to Calais and LD Lines services to Boulogne are experiencing some delays.

Train passengers faced delays and cancellations after the heavy rain caused rocks to slide on to rail tracks, closing a busy line in the Chepstow area of south east Wales. Services running between Newport and Gloucester have also been affected, along with cross-country trains between Nottingham and Cardiff.

Stephen Davenport of MeteoGroup UK, said: "This is the strongest storm we have had this year but it is just an autumnal storm, not untypical for this time of year."

The stormy weather is set to subside tomorrow but forecasters are warning the wind and rain will return next week.
