A teenage girl has died in hospital two weeks after she was shot in the eye with an air gun in Greater Manchester.

Rachel Davies, 18, was shot in Oram Street, Bury, just before midday on 7 December.

She died on Tuesday evening after her condition deteriorated, said Greater Manchester Police.

A 28-year-old man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder has been released on bail pending further inquiries until February.

Her parents Ricky and Angela described their daughter as a "beautiful and caring fun-loving teenager" who had been tragically taken away from them.

In a tribute Mr and Mrs Davies added: "Losing such a vibrant, beautiful and spirited daughter in this way is a tragedy without compare for us.

"Her beautiful smile and sense of fun will be greatly missed by us all.

"She had been considering whether to pursue a career in hairdressing or teaching and we were prepared to help and support her in whatever way she chose.

"We are full of a profound grief knowing that the whole world of opportunity that was laid out before our young lady is now beyond her."

The teenager leaves a sister aged 14 and a 10-year-old brother.

Her funeral is expected to be held in January and her ashes placed with her late grandmother in Darlington, County Durham, where she was born.

Pretty sad situation..

There is allot of airguns around... just idiots like this who gets these things banned..

i put my 22 in the loft just last month..

Its a very sad situation indeed. There isnt much more to say about it at this time of year :(

My missus`s auntie bought her 10 year old son an airsoft gun for Christmas.
Hes not even on a team.

Is it just me or parents gone mad.

My 13 year old has been at me all year to guy him an Air Rifle.

He's got no chance.

I don't think kids realise just how dangerous they can be.

i dont understand the need for people to own these guns they should be banned . rip young lady

i hope they jail the bastard for life that shot her .

agreed, let him rot in there he knew what he was firing at, no excuses and I bet it was a head shot and weapon kicked as usual with inexperience and hit the eye, hope he is proud as he is gonna be someones bit** in prison for a long, long time.

A team ? :err:

I was brought up with guns, air rifles, shotguns and target rifles.

It is how you are taught gun sense and supervised that matters, you can kill someone with just about anything so do we ban everything ?

rip girly, very very sad :(

I think airguns Need to come under the same law as firearms where you have to show proof that you have some place safe to fire them

a shooting team .there used to be a great member on here shot for ireland . minder . great guy .

other than that there is no purpose for these things . supervised or not .

Why do you need to be a member of local gun club i have been shooting nearly 20 years on and off and never been a member of a shooting club , the plain and simple truth of it is the air rifles need to come under better laws like cutdown versions of the firearms law so you have to show proof you've got somewhere safe to fire the weapon would be a good start

I think the notion of a gun club offers reassurance. Like proper training and secure storage etc.

any type of gun that can do harm should be banned. poor lass

After having a two-hour chat with my firearms officer just to get my license and if he feels i do not have the knowledge to use my firearms safely he can decline my application, and that is after you have had a background check do you know that if I get done for speeding or any other offence I have to inform my firearms officer, who can then take my license away from me

as far as I know for a air rifle all you need is to be is over 16 you do not have. to have a chat with anybody to see if you are safe to use it. You'll do not have to register the gun and do not have to show proof you've got somewhere safe to shoot it

I do agree that the air rifle law is sloppy and needs to be tightened up but the firearms and shotgun laws We have more than enough laws

As for the storage of a firearm both my rifle and shotgun have to be locked in a heavy duty steel cabinet which has to be bolted to the floor and wall, which has to pass a police inspection before they give me a licensed to get them you do not need any of this for a air rifle you can just throw that under your bed

firstly i dont have a right to ban anything. you cant have one rule for people who use em wisely and another rule to others. but you cant carry guns, knifes and baseball bats anyway .if guns dont kill people you gonna ban people? you cant exacltly ban people. bet they will ban em even them bb guns.

Actually, in Scotland you have to give your name and address when purchasing an air weapon now, as well as provide ID for it. I think possibly due to everyone being sick of idiots firing them at the emergency services or at kids etc.

At the end of the day, an air weapon only has one purpose and that is to shoot little bits of lead at things. I fail to see the point why someone would need one in a city. Also, you can buy air weapons with incredible amounts of power, bringing them just under the requirements for a regular rifle. You dont need a license or certificate for them, nor do you need to show you can safely store them.

But, at the end of the day, this is a very sad story and my heart goes out to the girls parents.
