British Gas owner Centrica has announced it is to raise gas prices by 35% and electricity prices by 9%.

The UK's biggest domestic energy supplier said that the price hikes would take place with immediate effect.

It blamed "soaring wholesale energy prices", but added that standard tariff prices would not rise again in 2008.

The move comes just a few days after rival EDF Energy put up gas prices by 22% and electricity prices by 17%, with other firms expected to follow suit.

Watchdog Energywatch said it believed the 35% gas bill rise was the biggest single increase in the price of a utility seen to date.

Centrica said the average dual fuel bill for a British Gas customer would go up by 25% - putting the average household bill at about £1,250. This is the second increase this year, after a 15% rise in bills in January.

"We very much regret that we have had to make this decision at a time when many household budgets are already under pressure," said British Gas managing director Phil Bentley.

"The simple fact though is that we have entered an era of unprecedented high world energy prices."

Centrica said that wholesale gas prices in the coming winter would be up 89% on the previous winter.

A report prepared for Centrica earlier this month warned that annual average gas bills could rise from £600 to more than £1,000 early in the next decade.

It added that the UK was suffering from diminishing gas reserves, and estimated that the UK would import 40% of its gas this year compared with 27% last year.

The price of gas has risen in recent months as it is linked to the cost of oil, although oil prices have started to fall again in recent weeks.

British Gas, which has 15.9 million customers, said its profits for the first half of the year were down by 69% to £166m.

This is getting one dear commodity, was going to go for a new gas cooker might look at electric now.

We need to start a discounted electricity section as this is going to be popular.

I need new knobs for my cooker.. £5 a pop.. and i need to replace 6 :| + the cost of gas.. Man that cooker aint worth it :|

Id love to rip the gas meter out but just cant as the boiler needs it :(..

Yeah, £2 /£3 from China, can't see nobody saying they work though. Nor anybody saying they don't for that matter.

I think in winter i'll have to start covering up, and farting to keep warm.

British Gas owner Centrica has seen operating profits decline 20% in the first six months of the year, following increases in wholesale gas prices.

Profits fell to £992m from £1.23bn a year earlier.

Despite the drop in earnings, Centrica said it would raise its dividend to 3.9 pence a share from 3.35p.

A day earlier Centrica said British Gas would increase gas bills by 35% with immediate effect in a bid to restore "reasonable profitability".

Centrica said the results were "good" given the tough market conditions.

The company's shares added 1.7% in London following the earnings news.

Centrica said it was obliged to raise gas prices in light of dwindling reserves and higher oil prices that had pushed up costs.

Centrica's move to increase prices on Wednesday came after EDF Energy raised prices last week. Analysts say other firms are likely to follow suit.

Phil Bentley, managing director of British Gas told the BBC: "The price of gas for this winter, even though it's fallen a little bit, it's still double what was last year".

nearly a £billion for 6 months yet still bump up prices and give more to share holders. makes you fecking weep......

I hope their customers leave in droves again.

But i expect it's Gordon 'trotski' Browns fault.... thats who will get the blame a few months down the line, from everyone.

re-nationalise I say and kick the shareholders out the country, give them nothing because they had way more than enough already.

cant do that, the only important people in the country are share holders and businessmen. the rest of us are just shit, to be used to earn these snivelling turds a crust. I too would renationalise the utility's, but with no compensation to the current owners. these utility's were sold for nothing by the vile government of Thatcher, often to friends and business associates of her husband, or businesses run by these people. the answer is a massive punitive tax (windfall tax). after all a large amount of this extra charge will be paid by the tax payer, we have allowed the gap between earnings and the cost of living to get so wide, by allowing businesses to pay low wages. i know they say they cannot afford to pay more, but why the hell should the government pay the difference between a living wage and what theses twats pay? this means that most of the top company's, earnings wise, are making each one of us pay, through tax, to make them extra money!!!!! all this comes from the world system being both morally and practically bankrupt. Capitalism officially died when the US government bailed out the two big mortgage company's recently. an action that the US would not allow in the country's of the eastern block after the fall of the USSR. yet it is fine for them now. God help us all. with ******s like this to lead us, it will be better to give each one of us a gun and one bullet, though i am sure some twat will try to sell both to someone.
