Does anybody know what the best lightweight linux distro is for an old laptop running with a dual core 1.5GHz processor, and 1Gb of RAM; the thing can barely run Windows XP anymore.

I've tried a few distros including Mint OS and LXLE but even with them there remains some lag. I need a desktop operating system that can run a word processor for taking notes during university lectures; anybody have any suggestions for what may work for me?

My suggestion would be Mint. Those specs should be more than enough to run things smoothly. Make sure you've installed any additional drivers using the proprietary hardware tool and disable any 3D acceleration on the graphics. Also make sure you're using the Cinnamon edition as it's better optimized with regards to hardware usage.

If this still doesn't work I'd try LXLE which is even lighter with reduced functionality but should cater for your needs.

I would go fo Manjaro XFCE got it running on 512MB ram laprop, and it runs fine.

If the machine it toiling to run XP now, this suggests to me that it did run OK before- spec certainly seems up to it- so perhaps it is a hardware problem that is slowing it up.

Think he may be sorted by now lads :D lol
