On the verge of changing ISP and wondered if Virgin was till the best ?
Been with TalkTalk must be 8+ years now but feel if there is a better faster service out there its time for me to change

Do virgin have speed restrictions ? Download caps ? etc etc.

whats there hub modem/router thing like ? Ive read some things about changing settings for certain things I think

any help/tips welcomed :)

speed are very good, i get 100mb down and 8ish up. (£40 notes a month)
the superhub is shit as a router, wireless is rubbish.

i believe the superhub 2as is alot better for wireless connection.

Wireless is a must have, everything is wireless here

hmmmm got me thinking now lol

i live in a flat, my superhub is roughly 10 feet from the lads xbox. but there is two brick walls seperating them.
barely get a signal on the xbox and it drops out..
i have the older super hub2 and not the as one )

you can put the superhub into modem mode and use a decent router, which is the best bet i think

VM 100Mb going up to 200Mb soon :). ~£38, or it was, seems to creep up yearly but it's fast and little restrictions unless you are in the top 5% of downloaders in your area.

Was looking at the 50mb + Weekend phone line
better than the 6mb Im getting now lol

5.9mb download 0.71 upload

Im on BT infinity..never have any problems and I average 40-60mb £23pm.
They are doing some good deals at the mo.

EDIT..im waiting for my contract with BT to finish and im changing over to SSE for broadband.offered me 2 years free and only £12pm line rental.
May be worth a look on their home page see the offers as the also do fiber.

just had a quick look and they are offering 6 months free including line rental..so nowt for the first 6 months..
then you have 12 months on the package you choose..

Plus Net, have been superb for me. Its part of BT so gets all the good benefits from that, but because it is separate, they are not subject to all the site bans that big 5 are subject too

speeds are deffo the best, and I find reliability are on par if not better than most in my area if not a lot better !!! and living in a big city you hear allsorts of probs, and I can say virgin is better in my area, every ISPS has lots of peeps complaining about there service but we do tend to moan more about the service we actually use. if your not happy just move and find out for yourself, you will either think thank good I moved or ffs why did I move lol.....

as for wifi with some style of houses and the more devises we use wifi is becoming more of a pain. I find wireless keyboards and mice a complete pain in the ass and have not used for years.

if your need for speed and the wifi aint doing it for you then get home plugs, cheap as chips and very very easy to install and use ....

just my opinion tho :)

Virgin do have traffic management in place for peak times.
Virgin Media Cable traffic management policy

Dont think it will effect you much though if your looking at 30mb and above.

Im with talktalk and get a steady 17mb adsl...but 3 price increases this year leaves me wondering if i should switch to somebody else.

The price increases are a joke mate, i started off with half price broadband for 18 months and now 11 months into my contract im paying more than other providers.
ive always had a good download speed but the upload is a bit crappy, think i get the same as your getting, ive never had any problems with the services but some of the comments i see on facebook when it comes to problems are a bit worrying lol

Steady 16mb with Plusnet, coming up to the end of my 2nd year, each time the 12 months comes to the end if you call up they will give you the deal for new customers so currently paying £16.50 line rental and £3.00 truly unlimited internet, with no price changes in the 12 months

Once one provider increases prices, the rest generally follow.

@Rat, you need to google key facts indicator (KFI) as it's something Ofcom make the broadband providers supply to us customers about any traffic management.

I can't see any traffic management on TalkTalk but found this for Virgin. This is better than it used to be because download speed was severely restricted but now it's ok. However, Virgin slow down upload speeds and P2P/newsgroups downloads.

The superhub routers are known for being crap.

Compare total price of VM (with landline and any additional call packages required) to TalkTalk's Fibre broadband (and their call packages) first !!

TalkTalk would likely provide you with same offer as new customers getting now.

You'll be surprised at how many people just compare broadband prices when virgin generally charge more for their landline and additional call packages/options than other providers do (except for maybe BT lol).

I've just joined VM and took that deal for £22 for 9 months, £30+ after that. Email off them saying my area will get this vivid upgrade soon boosting to 70MB. Plus if you get a friend to recommend you you both get £50 credit off bill, yours will be free installation (normally £50) or if you choose self install like I did you'll get £30 credit off bill

Been on live chat with TalkTalk and they couldn't offer me no better than what's offered on the web site
so Virgin deal is much better and faster speeds

the wifi concerns me though I have to admit

I think they solved the problems in the later generation Superhubs @Rat but you could always use the modem only mode and your own router.

at the end of the day virgins equipment is free, well it has been for me anyways, and they are upgrading my sh1 to the sh2ac for free as well when they switch me over to vivid :) and if it becomes faulty they come out and replace it for free no matter how long you have had there equipment. there is no way your going to get the best wifi with free equipment with any of the suppliers tbh ......
