Which is the best way to hide your IP ? some google add-on ? DNS ? .I'm on virmin superhub which doesn't allow you to add a dns to the router. I would prefer for the household or if not 1 PC .

Opinions vary but, in reality, you hide the public IP of the router. The device IP is hidden anyway by the NAT feature of the router. That means to hide the household everyone needs to use whatever service you choose.

The most comprehensive method is probably a pay-service using a VPN. Be aware that reliability can be variable and there will be some latency. The 'whatismyipaddress' site has some comparisons as a starter.

What are you trying to do ? Why are you trying to change it for the whole house ? Why are you trying to change DNS ?

Why are you asking all these questions?
Why is it your concern?
Why is it anything to do with you?

He's only asked a question for gods sake.
Sorry but these type of replies really wind me up.

Have you actually got anything useful to add instead of wasting my time ???

I probably could help the OP if they could explain what they are trying to do. Seeing as they suggestion they started talking about (changing DNS) is nothing to do with hiding IP makes me think they can't quite explain what they are trying to do which is a very common issue in IT, people think about solutions before knowing the problem. And if they really need to do it for everything they access in their house rather then specific sites, it makes a BIG difference to the solution.

Now, do you want to crawl back under your rock with your tail between your legs or are you going to try and find a solution for OP ?

Because I want to , I would prefer to hide my ip when browsing and moving around the internet. I'm not smuggling small arms (well the odd broken barbie or ken) I would just prefer for ppl not to know my IP.

Basically so if anyone in the silverdale household goes on the net our IP isn't in full view. I just prefer it that way.

Tee hee. Don't talk crap.
The big thread title stating "Hiding your IP" and what he wanted to do was all you needed to know.
You just thought you'd be a clever ass and basically insinuate that he was up to no good.
Jog on.

You could set your proxy in the browser to use free anonymous proxies.
Just Google free anonymous proxies and you will find a load of servers you can put in.

OK now I know what you are trying to do, you can use a VPN/proxy server but in order to do the whole house but then you will need to install an extra server or router to route all your traffic via proxy. DNS change won't have any effect.

Decent proxy servers can be had for around $10 a month, hidemyass being one of the best and that also encrypts your traffic using VPN. https://www.bestvpn.com/blog/9287/hidemyass_review/

Be aware that proxy servers will slow down your connection which is I why I said that high bandwidth sites like iplayer, netflix, youtube you probably don't want to use the proxy. And many sites block proxy servers so there will be a cat and mouse game with them. And the one mentioned is based in UK and I believe will give up their logs if there is a court order.

That service also has a client option so you can do it device by device without needing a new router/server. And that will give more flexibility in that you can control which sites will be proxies and which won't.

Free proxies are slow and aren't really going to be suitable for all sites, especially streaming one which is why I am recommending to OP not to think about proxing his whole connection.

still waiting for you to contribute something useful.

To be honest ip means sod all, I wouldn't bother hiding it unless doing something untoward.

^^^ This. There are many ways around using a proxy service.

Forgot to mention that it will probably cause problem with banking sites as well as many don't like proxies.

Lol. Just techie discussion

To complicate matters, a lot of non-transparent proxies forward the X-Forwarded-From field so the site could determine your IP anyway. Some proxies don't support SSL but don't tell you and just route SSL traffic. Some sites query the sending IP on common proxy ports such as 8080 and reject traffic if the proxy is identified.

One somewhat complicated way of doing what you want is to double-NAT selecting a public subnet you'll never want to route to and initiate internal traffic from the second NAT interface. That gets messy (technically) pretty quickly.

As @manic01 suggests, probably not worth the pain!

turning out to be a touchy subject this :)

Not really, some people just like being obtuse.

I really, really, REALLY won't both unless there is a specific reason. I work in IT security and work and I don't proxy connection at home.

As I have said and Him Her, it adds a lot of complications while buying little benefit.

If you want to hide your IP, here is what I'd recommend:

Use Tor. You can also use 3rd party apps through Tor like a socks proxy, e.g. localhost:9050. Ask if you need more information.

If for example, you're like Edward Snowden and want to betray your country for the welfare of humanity, I'd recommend using Tails: https://tails.boum.org/

You install it on a USB drive and boot your computer from the USB drive. It's a totally secure operating system that leaves no trace.

Of course, remember, there is no 100% foolproof way of hiding your IP address, but a VPN + Tor is as good as it will get. Even better would be something like Tails + free open WiFi + masking your MAC address (which Tails does automatically)!

P.S. Some of the replies in this thread are utterly pointless. If you're not going to help the OP, why bother to respond? Looking to get your post count up, spam the thread and infuriate people generally?
