Well, yesterday in awe of all the gadgetry techno wiz at the Gadget Show I signed up to Virgin 100Mb.

Free Install and Two Months Free (Normally £35). Reasonable deal I thought, considering I'm paying £25 for 12Mb at the moment, just worried now about a) their service and b) the mess they will make of my wall.......

Also, I do have a question.

My current router/telephone line/RJ45 data point/Sonos bridge is on one side of the room, my TV on the other. If I wanted to at some point in the future if I ever decide to get VTV, can it be easily moved?

They will install a splitter so you can have your internet and TV in separate rooms if you want. All the installs I have seen have been pretty neat. Just make sure you are there and let them know if you have any specific requirements regarding routing of the cable.

Customer service is so and so. Most times over the last 17 years I have been them (TW then Blueyonder then VM) I haven't had any issues but they have cocked up billing a couple of times (quickly fixed with a phone call) so always worth double checking.

Also the 100mb service will be bring upgraded to 120mb over the next year or so. Upload speed will get increased over time.

This is my issue, all my floors etc are wood/laminate, things are not easy to "navigate" so I would prefer not to have cables running all around my wall. I spent a lot of time when I did all the work making sure this was the case.

Simple way to explain is that in a square box the left top corner is the router, this is the front of the house where the existing (or rather old TW) point came in. Right top is where my TV is, the rear of my house, the same place my sat feed currently comes in, outside I have a 1m gap between the conservatory and the party wall where this feeds in...so how would they get the entry point to there from the road...

Forgot to also add everything ^^ away is other houses

looking at the picture you posted, if thats an outside wall it will be easy to fit TV point if its not they will throw cable over roof and fit TV point that way, ask them to fit one when they come to do install should still be free :) tell them you don't want the flooring taking up.

bit of an odd house m8 no doors to get in bet thats a bugger :)

Posh git,two kitchens..........your not really Gordon Ramsay are you :)

Just an extension, i just failed to put the entrance piece in ......so technically one kitchen.....

I did it for quickness, next time I'll pop out visio instead of paint and make it more indicative of the surroundings. I even have a visio template for the wallpaper and can do it in 3D.

;)

make sure you do, that way we will be able to give correct advise :)

As an aside, is there an available router/modem which I can buy on Virgin that allows me to flash with DD-WRT?

Actually, the more I look into this "superhub", I'm actually getting more concerned.

Firstly, It's not wall mountable which is a major not an option for me....

Secondly, Virgin leave about 1m of coax hanging off it.....and apparently it doesn't really stand up properly.

Thirdly, all the connections are at the bottom (or rear depending on how you look at it), so even if I wanted to fudge mounting it, i actually cant......

Finally, even if I wanted to use my own device, I still have to use the supercrap aswell so two routers....

It needs to look no different than this:

Yes mate the Super Hub is super ugly, big and very badly built and the wifi range is crap, it has to be in open space anything in front of it and the signal drops like nothing is a matter.

Saying that though it is the most user friendly router I have ever seen loads of settings in advance mode and two seconds to configure.

Wireless I'm not too bothered about as most of my house is wired through, just for ipads etc though.

User friendliness, again not too bothered, but if its too "user friendly", i.e. dumbed down so much that I can't "tweak" or change it (like turn off DHCP, use Port Forwarding etc etc), i won't be impressed.

Its deffo not dumbed down mate. complete opposite you can port forward, address mac filters and even set times for your kids access etc its user friendly in a good way mate.

Bloody hell, just had a text from them wanting to Install my services on Tuesday....!!!

Only ordered it late Wed afternoon...

Impressive.

I can only speak from my installation, but try and be there while they do it. I wasn't, and they drilled through a wall from the inside with 15mm drill bit,
and knocked out a big chunk of brick on the outside. When my wife pointed this out, response was "husband can easily fix with a bit of cement, luv".
I needed matching brick, matching mortar, and a ladder. I had these, but they didn't know that, or care. Easily avoidable by using a small pilot bit,
with care, followed by the larger bit from both sides, but fast installation was all that mattered.

I abandoned the superhub, after many attempts at repositioning for acceptable wifi range. It will work if suspended from a ceiling in a central location,
(not much good for rj45), but even then, the leds are like a 70's glitterball, very distracting in subdued lighting.

Got fed up eventually, and just used it as a cable modem (much bigger than my "old tech" one), and went back to my old D link router.
The superhub looks flash, flashes a lot, but is more about styling than function.

i had a lot of trouble with my superhub, so i gave virgin a ring and they sent m8 out the same hub but it have new internals thats what they told me, and been honest its been running 3 weeks now and not needed to reboot at all, its been really good.

None of this is inspiring me with confidence. I'm already thinking i'm going to be unhappy. Missus is already bleating on about having "yet another" box in the living room...
