I am currently with namesco and they want

TOTAL DUE £64.61 - I guess this will be for 4 years as the last renewal was for 4 years too.

Any ideas

Do you just want to renew the name or do you want webspace for a website with it.

www.1and1.co.uk costs

£2.49 for first year then £2.99 per year after for a co.uk name transfer only.
£8.99 for a .com name transfer only.

Then you just forward your domain onto your existing website hosting.

If you need webspace hosting then their packages start at £2.49 per month for 5gb plus lots of other features.

Thanks for the replies guys, Captin I only need the domain name - dont need webspace

@ NoodlesJoe - GBBO only provides .co.uk I think ?

Will check these out

Thanks again

In that case 1and1 is £8.99 per year. :) (£1 cheaper than 123reg) But not as cheap as godaddy which is £4.85 per year.

Started looking today at renewing the domain at godaddy and I see that you can pay to make your registration details private.

Now on my current namesco accoutn I had this however on go daddy its another £5 a month

Well I saw that if I renew my domain for 9 years i can get this for aprox £34 with a 25% for spending over £48 but when I add private regigration it goes up to around £85.

I dont really want to spend money as it is only parked up at the minute.

Should i go for this or would it be ok - I know that it is pretty easy to hijack a domain name and i think thats propably the reason i got it with the last registrar. My domain is not worth anything commercially but then again I dont want my details shown.

£35 for 9 years :)

cheers

Edit

I tried using a code I found cjcPRIVATE thats discounts (valid till 12/31/10) the cost of private registration off the renewal but I cant get it to work, well I could not find any codes that would work. Are these codes only for use in the us or something as no errors where shown in the checkout whereas at the least the expired codes i found showd errors

I dont know why they charge to keep your details off your account, I have 15 domains held with 1and1 and have never paid to keep my details private.

All I had to do is log into my Nominet account and put a tick in a box to keep my details private, nothing to do with 1and1 as they are only the hosting company, the domains are registered with Nominet, but only bought through 1and1.

Typical American company, charge you for everything. :)

Lots of godaddy discount codes from this place. They also have lots of really good IPTV shows about tech. :)

Revision3 > Exclusive Coupon Codes from GoDaddy

Even I can not remember being charged for keeping details private and for that reason I am going to now look into the other suggestions as the cost goes up to nearly £10 a year with godaddy

Hi mate are you suggesting that it may be possible to transfer my domain name to one of the mentioned companies and I should then be able to log into nominet and chage the settings for privacy. If so is this not cheeky by the companies to charge for keeping the details private.

I had a look at nominet but can not see how to create an account.

Thanks

When I got my first domain name I got it from 1and1 (and all the rest, I havent been with anyone else). I got a certificate from Nominet to say they have recieved my domain registration from 1and1. I logged into Nominet using my domain name and the option to keep my details private are there.

1and1 are only the domain name provider, just like godaddy, 123reg and many others. All UK domains have to be registered with Nominet, they dont sell domains that is the job of 1and1 and the likes.

Everyone with a UK domain name will have or can setup a nominet account to manage the domain and who it is registered with IE: 1and1.

.COM domains will be registered with someone else.

I think I know why you have to pay for US (.com) to keep your details safe, this is because Nominet is non-profit but the US equivalent is not, they are a commercial company.

Some name registries are government departments (e.g., the registry for Sri Lanka nic.lk). Some are co-operatives of Internet service providers (such as DENIC) or not-for profit companies (such as Nominet UK). Others operate as commercial organizations, such as the US registry (nic.us).

The allocated and assigned domain names are made available by registries by use of the WHOIS system and via their Domain name servers.

Some registries sell the names directly (like SWITCH in Switzerland) and others rely on separate entities to sell them. For example, names in the .com TLD are in some sense sold "wholesale" at a regulated price by VeriSign, and individual domain name registrar sell names "retail" to businesses and consumers.

If you want to activate your Nominet account for a UK domain (co.uk, org.uk etc...) then you need to sign in with the email address you put on record when obtaining your domain name.

Goto this page - https://secure.nominet.org.uk/auth/...l;jsessionid=5BCC547291F84E650BAC069F9301DE48

In your account you can view/download your registration certificate for printing or just keeping.

An introduction to Nominet

What we do

We operate at the heart of e-commerce in the UK, running one of the world's largest Internet registries and managing over eight million domain names. With highly respected industry credentials, we are entrusted with the safe, stable and secure management of the .uk Internet name space.

We maintain the register of .uk domain names. We run the technology which locates a computer on the Internet hosting the web site or email system you're looking for when you type in a web address or send an email to an address that ends in .uk.

This includes:

Maintaining the accuracy and completeness of the .uk register database to high professional standards
Ensuring consistency and fairness in the registration and transfer of domain names
Providing a number of look-up services for people to find out whether a .uk domain name has been registered and, if so, by whom
Offering a Dispute Resolution Service based on mediation to handle domain name disputes

We have a reputation for excellent customer service that is consistently reflected in the results from our satisfaction surveys, and other national Internet registries often visit us to learn from our registry model.

I see ICANN are the US registrars. So is there anyway to log in to the US version of nominet to see if the same can be done with them, I doubt it but worth a try. I am not even sure if I found the right site as nic.us looks cheap and the url name changes as well.

I guess all your domains are UK ones then.

I am now leaning towards going with 1and1 rather than godaddy but if there is a way of logging into the US version like you say you can do with nominet then may be godaddy will still be an option. However as you state they are a profit organisation then probably not but still worth a try lol however I just can't seem to find a link

Just cheekily emailed sales and asked them if the renewal fees are negiotable as I will be moving to 1and1 as there prices are much lower lol

Doubt anything will come of it but who knows lol

well well well it seems like you should always ask lol - just recived this mail :)

still not as good as 1and1 but they are negiotiating

Thanks for your email. Obviously we would like to keep your business if we can. I can see that when you first registered the name this was on a four-year registration. What I would like to propose in terms of renewal pricing is as follows: 2 Year @ £25 + VAT 4 Years @ £40 + VAT Let me know if this is suitable? I know it's slightly off 1 and 1's registration pricing (which is £9 a year if memory serves) but on the basis of our service is the best I can offer. If one of these options is suitable please let me know and I'll update for you.

I wonder if you can play one company against another lol - maybe I should ask 1and1 now lol

They came back with this - off I go to email 1and1 now :)

2 Year @ £25 + VAT
4 Years @ £40 + VAT
6 Years @ £58 + VAT
8 Years @ £74 + VAT

Yip all mine are UK domains.

When I was looking around originally, I discovered that UK domains are best bought through UK or European sites, like 1and1, and US .com's are best bought through US sites like godaddy.

Also being based in the UK I didnt want some yank .com address. :)

If you dont mind me asking - how did you reach that conclusion.

So me having a .com through a UK registrar is not as good as having it with a US provider. Why is this

well I wanted to start an ecommerce site so thought that a .com would be better :)

Still havent heard back from 1and1 yet

I just compared pricing, and it always seemed that a co.uk domain was cheaper this side of the pond, whereas a .com domain was cheaper on t'other side of the pond.

Things may have changed since I got mine 10 years ago, but I still find 1and1 hard to beat.

As far as e-commerce goes, and this is only my opinion mind, I would much rather buy something from a .co.uk site than a .com, at least it sounds British. I know there are lots of Chinese dropshippers on ebay with .co.uk sites and emails and everything they sell comes from china.

I probably doesn't matter any more now as the nearly all the TLD's are available to any one regardless of what region you live.
