im with AOL and they are now de-prioritising peer 2 peer downloads. so during the day i cant download anything via shareaza. whats the best ISP that offers 8mb uncapped and doesnt throttle down speeds? how much a month? free router etc etc???

My mate is on Sky's unlimited "upto 16Mb" and says he gets 12Mb/s on speedguide and 200Kb+ on torrents with no shaping even at peak hours. Only problem is that you also have to take out the minimum TV package @ £17p/m in addition.

I'm on BT's "upto 8Mb" Option 3 which also has no download limits, but p2p is throttled and as 'one of the top ISPs' by subscriber number contention is an issue in most areas. However, working in BT's favour is their newsgroups are hosted by Giganews.

Currenlty with sky on the uncapped line they are perfect for downlaod no traffic shaping or nothing.

I'm with UKonline. They use the easynet service which Sky use. They don't traffic shape at all. My computer is on 24/7 and have downloaded / uploaded about 7tb in the year or so that I have been with them without any complaints.

I am with BT, on option 3. I dont do much P2P downloading, but I never have problems with downloading films etc from BT Vision et al.

I'm not capped and I'm with Virgin media. Oh and one exciting thing about it, is the fact they are looking to up the download speed to 50MB, Costing roughly about 30-40 a month.
Its on there web site for anyone wanting more info ( not sure if you can post links )

if your running a "business" you may.

Such "businesses" are very probably one of the reasons why most ISP's have to apply a cap of some form !

I'm starting to think that the majority of people may be better off if the ISP's moved away from a speed based costing system to a bandwidth based system. Simply charge by the Gbyte downloaded !

I use BE Unlimited...they are quite up front about P2P not being throttled and there's no 'fair use' clause... great service ..crap router..

virgin media use traffic shaping fella's. its the reason i told them where to go, im now with BE.

Traffic management

i used to get about 14mbit download from my 20mbit virgin connection. u download 3gb between the hours of 4pm and 9pm and ur throttled at 75%. I get the exact same download from BE which never gets throttled and a increase in upload (from 90kb to 180kb)

But if people start abusing the connections then they too will be forced to take measures just like the other ISP's.

There's just no real reason why most people need to constantly download such huge amounts of information continuously.

Not on a residential connection.

I wonder if the same things apply to connections classed as business ones?

On a per-user basis, very few businesses would use anything like as much bandwidth as some of the people above expect from a domestic connection.

People need to realise that bandwidth costs money and if you use a connection to the point that an ISP is no longer making money out of you then the ISP is bound to act.

Or Tiscalli see's them doing well and buys them out like they did with Nildram. I was on a 50 mg download a month and unlimimited at off peak. Ideal for me as i downloaded after midnight when i went to bed. But Tiscalli came and killed it lol. So these smaller companys like Be in this current climate have to be carefull that they dont get bought out to keep them alive.

I'm on virgin. Now I know why torrents are slow. I thought that was just how they are. I don't have a bt line so I think I'm stuck. btw is sopcast etc p2p?

Bandwidth these days is as cheap as chips. ISP's can cope with small loses due to heavy users, if not then they would'nt still be in buisness would they? :p

Sopcast is p2p.

Bandwidth within the boundaries of a particular provider is relatively cheap but once you start crossing those boundaries onto the wider internet it can be pretty expensive.

ISP's factor everything based on average usage. Agreed, there are going to be customers who use less and customers who use more but the average takes this into account. Problem is, at the moment the average requirement is rising much quicker than the present local infrastructure can cope with and VM's debt burden simply doesn't let them invest any faster.
