Hi all.
Just a bit of advice please on my sat receiver, in the audio menus there is a setting called digital down mix. When this is set to "no" I get Dolby D through my onkyo 5.1 but the volume is quieter than if set to "yes" but then I only get Dolby pro logic II. Is it best set to no Dolby digital down mix and stay with Dolby D (where available).
cheers

The DownMix mode is basically that, the receiver is downmixing DD 5.1 to PCM audio which is a 2 channel stereo output that has been with us for years. Its done this way as standard LCD/LED/plasma Tv's will only have the pulse code modulator built into them and not a DD5.1 decoder

The DD5.1 track used on normal SDat broadcasts is the 384kbps variety where as DVD uses both 384 and 448 variety and blu ray uses higher still with 640 and then you go onto the HD soundtracks which are even higher.

so form that you can gather that the more compression used some loss is incurred in the audible soundtrack

Thanks for that Digi247.
Ill stick to the no downmix and get 5.1 sound when and where available.
Cheers
