I have just bought a Phillips ambilight tv and it has a DVB-C tuner with a CI (PCMCIA) slot. I have read quite a few threads now on this forum that speak about specific cards that are to be used, but I still dont have a clear picture of what is actually required. If I buy a cam module (e.g diablo cam?) Is this all that I will need providing that it has up to date firmware, oh and obviously the cable feed. This is the image that I am getting, but I have also read articles that discuss cards.

Please could somebody explain briefly what is needed and reccomend a card and possibly website where I can get hold of what I need.

This is kinda important for me to sort out because my dbox is on its way out and I dont want to miss all the crimbo films.

Thanks for reading.

Ok - sounds good.

You have:
TV with dvb-c tuner
CI slot to take a CAM

The dvb-c tuner may not be HD capable - you'd have to read up on that.

You need :
A CAM preped for Nagra (joker CAM) & a Nagra card (Atmel/Mosc/Fun etc).
or
A CAM that can run an EMU of a card. (Diablo with Stealth loaded)

To program up the above you need a CAS programmer or/& a card programmer (CAS3+)

It *may* be possible to program a CAM with an old lappy's PC Card slot.
It *may* be possible to program a card with an lappy's Smart Card slot.
But a CAS3+ does it all

What you need to do:
Get your TV receiving FTA. If you don't get that working - no point going further.
Config settings with NetID & Symbol Rate for your area & start a scan from a known used Freq.

The EMU path doesn't yet offer AU afaict. The EMUs can do it, but with the ROM patches the providers ran a while back, I doubt that the stock EMU's ROM is gonna make correct AUs. I can't locate the ROM images - I saw them go by in a Stealth load, but the CAM FS doesn't show the filename I saw.

Cards do offer AU - you'd be using a card that others keep up-to-date for this experimental & educational use.

The Blue Zeta ViaCAM can be reflashed to a JokerCAM, but it can also just be updated to a later native image. Apparently this may not be possible on some due to tracks having been cut by the manufacturer, but these can often be fixed...

Card BK & IRD?s need to match the CAM's

You also need the CAM to be configured correctly - if you're a bit out, then the TV may shutdown & refuse to play (at all)!

It would probably be good to have a Mod create a new area for TV based DVB-C threads on the Cable discussion area round Dbox/Dream/Star/etc. What ya reckon?

Thanks for the reply woosh. Some interesting areas there for me to look into. I will try a search for the FTA channels tonight when I get in from work. I have looked on ebay at the diablo cards but the sellers that I have emailed have all said that their cards are Sat only, is this the case?or is this just a standard cam used for both?

I think it would be a great idea for the Mod to create an area on the site for this, I would imagine there are quite alot of people that have the capabilities for these now.
