Copy and paste the following text into a new notepad document, the save it as *.reg (where * = anything u want, e.g windows.reg), once you save it simply double click on it and it will enter the code to your registry and validate your copy of windows, allowing you all your lovelly updates etc :)

All that will do is change your product key to a _currently_ working volume license key (aka corporate)

WARNING: do not do this on none corporate versions of XP !!!!

I don't have the corporate version and it worked fine for me.

It saves people from downloading all these daft 'patches' every few months.

A vlk (either through the above reg hack or a vb script + run command) works fine provided that you've already installed XP Pro (never tried in XP Home).

It will only not work on a fresh install of a non-corp copy of XP (is that english? :)), i.e. at the point of the installation that XP asks for the licence key. This goes for both attended and unattended installs (I've tried).

640 = VLK. This should only work on Volume License Media (aka Corporate)

If it does work on retail copies you are on very shakey ground for an update detecting this !

I used to use the manual WGA removal method but I had to do a clean install on a machine and it worked fine. XP Pro SP2. Well fine so far..updates all done as well.

that worked a treat thanks

When wga first came out you could uninstall the update , which I did and then I had uptades set to ask me when to download and install , when wga was in the list I unticked it and its never asked me again , machine still updating ok lol

Really??, lolol

Whenever I'm on a machine without the latest WGA it always prevents any updates and only offers me 1 update - WGA, lol

im currently using windows xp student edition and ive never had an issue.

No patches needed works from the install.

The best way to get a working key of xp or vista is just go to currys, dixons and pc world with a pen and notepad.
then just copy down a key from a computer on display. thats what i have done in the past and never had a problem. No need to do it now as i have a gen vista.
