I imagine it would not look green for long (if safe) full of uneaten food, and fish feces.

I argue that an aquarium is an ecosytem and could not imagine a working ecosystem without plants.
Real reen plants produce oxygen and remove nutrients from the water which in my opinion improves the water quality and thus is good for the fishes. Most plants which are available on the market are easy enough to maintain in gravel with medium grade lighting. It's actually easy to maintain plants in aquarium, I don't understand why people tend to believe otherwise.

I'm not a keeper of fish but I don't think putting a plastic in there which isn't intended to be submerged with fish is a good idea. Various plasticisers or flame retardants can leach out of the material over time.

you can buy but you cant use the stuff you would put in your garden, you would kill your fish, you can buy the grass from main suppliers of fish ,only tropical fish .Sourcingmap Fish Tank Square Artificial Grass Lawn.mind don't use anything from b&q ect your fish will die.

You can get Moss carpet that looks like grass and spreads nice and evenly
