New Hobby

Always throw the Heads away, though popular opinion says there's not enough Methanol to make a difference, get roughly 6 litres from 23-25 litre brew

I've 2 similar ones that are not temp controlled 1 white just like that and a stainless steel one. I was into it at the start but it became laborious so got a second still to speed the process up but it still seamed like a lot of hassle for a drinkable but not nice vinegar even after double distillation :)

Price of sugar now is well cheap now so you picked a good time to start, i used various yeasts and mixes including birdwatcher tomato paste mix and other variations. I would like to try different still's as i'm sure i could make some great vinegar but i don't have the space to do these things :(. Do let me know how the temp controlled ones work and enjoy the reflux still ! I made many liters of vinegar and enjoyed them with great effect :)

Been using a airstil for 2 years now very good bit of kit.We have shop near us that sells everything u need from home brew to full scale stills and flavours

Have had great results with the first two runs, first run was Watermelon, after the heads output was around 85%, let it run until output was below 30% then tempered it down to 50%/100 proof, that went down nicely with the missus :), next run was chilli rum, initial output at 75%, tempered down to 40%/80 proof, which is going down nicely now. Brew on the go is strawberry, expecting 18-20% out of the barrel, should be 85% initially from the still. Temp control is a gimmick, I tried setting it up but settled for 100 deg and sample the output after 1 1/2 hours. Using turbo fruit yeast and 7.5kg of sugar to 25 litres

Long as you don't drink yourself to a early grave m8

moderation and enjoy it for many years , so cheap to make as well ;)

So do you not think the temp control ones are any better? i was hoping it was a step up and may have bought 1 if the wife allowed it :)

What make of turbo yeast are you using? are you using just plain ol sugar?

I've had yeast and sugar for months , was going to make a flavored brew for xmas and never did :( now with this good weather i'm temped to make something refreshing.

This thread has made me think more about starting again ... will let you know if i bother:)

@spud1966 Am already nearly 58 mate, lol. @biggles Puriferm yeast mate (18-20%) Ordinary sugar usually, Asda doing 5Kg for about £3, have just set a Rum away with a mix of ordinary sugar and Molasses to give it some flavour. Have just ran 7.5L of Strawberry, tempered down to 40% but it's a bit sharp

Funny enough I had a gander on ebay after my last post and found a few different fruit yeasts and ordered 4, 1 of them was puriferm  the others were alcotec. Good to know your having success with puriferm , i was hesitant because of the price lol.

Now i just have to get my ass into gear and clean stuff when it arrives and in the meantime think of what flavour/s to run. I'll not hold my breath on it, altho its a start :)
