Iv always wanted to learn to play guitar, I used to have guitar hero for Xbox and took to it like a duck to water, I might invest in a cheap acoustic see if I like it

I wouldn't recommend buying a 'cheap' acoustic, buy an electric and learn with that, I spend about £50 on my first guitar which included a (terrible) 10W electric amp from ebuyer about 10 years ago. It was fine for a few months and allowed me to see if I liked to play.

The reason I suggest an electric is that strings on an acoustic are normally much thicker which will makes it difficult to play as a beginner; and will quickly put you off.

Also, I'd recommend you try Justin Guitar | Free Guitar Lessons for introductory video lessons; or if you're interested in video games, get hold of Rocksmith for the PC or console - which allows you to plug your real guitar into your console / PC, practise and learn some tunes.

I remember a friend saying an acoustic would toughing your fingers up, I did think elec so I could use earphones I'll have a look about about, I see apps, videos all the time so I'm sure I won't be stuck for tips,

Both electric and acoustic will toughen your fingers up, just at different rates.. It's easier to learn with an electric; but I do love the sound of my acoustic (also Yamaha!).

That's what I'll look for electric with a small amp

Don't forget to buy an electronic tuner as well. You'll need it until your ear develops enough to tune your guitar on your own.

Im in glasgow bit of traveling to get there, i see a few in town + theres pawn shops ect im not wanting to spend to much incase i dont get into it, ill go for a solid feeling one thats not to heavy, amp and tuner some spare strings

Beware that strings come in different sizes, and if you put a different guage strings on your guitar to what it currently has you may have difficulty keeping it in tune until it has been 'set up' by someone who knows how (usually someone at a guitar store!), in many cases you just need to adjust the neck tension using an Allan key. If you install strings yourself, make sure to pick up a string winder which are only a couple of quid; and ensure you have some wire cutters to trim the excess after winding.

There is also a particular way to wind the strings so that they lock and do not slip when tightened, so please make an effort to look on YouTube!

plenty of guitar shops in glasgow guitar guitar southside music kennys to name but a few . i would go down the acoustic route you can always put thiner gauge stings on i use 10s or 11s on my guitars plenty of free tuning apps best one ive found is guitar tuna brilliant wee app the snark is an excellent tuner lots of deals for guitars on ebay bought a couple from there a hudson and an epiphone enjoy your new hobby m8

My friend gave me a guitar as a gift, but I don't know how to play. So how could I learn to play it myself?

Google is your friend m8. Look for basic guitar songs to play and the most important thing of all is to be very patient. Remember that even professional guitarists never stop learning. Good luck and keep us posted. :)

Thanks for your suggestion, miggy:eatarrow:

But I think it would be much harder for me to learn play, because I can not even read a music score:grayno:

Wrong attitude m8 :( the coloured dots on these charts indicate where your finger positions should be. Pick 3 chords look for these 3. G,E,D master these chords and you can play lots of songs. Do not try to learn too many chords at this present time it will baffle you. Have a read of this chart and practice the chord shapes(where your fingers go) first before you play any form of tune. :)
