Koi carp

Hi all the weather has been really nice and my koi have loved every minute coming up for food all day and playing about on the top

Lots of nice natural foods as the flies have been hatching in the water

Sat there for 4 hours just watching them having a few beers !!!!

NICE !!

Had a heron in the garden this morning but i think he thought better as my one of my koi decided to have a go back lol

I have thousands of pounds worth of fish and he was trying to feast on some very expensive sushi !!

I have always wanted to try out Koi, just never had a big enough garden...

Hopefully the next move lol will include a bigger garden :)

Regards
Mick

Mate you would be amazed at what i can cram into the smallest of gardens.... i've built koi ponds as small as a metre squared so long as they are deeper eg: 1x1x2m

let me know if you need any help with design or build :)

Brett.

If anyone lives in west mids then i can come and help out with anything build wise, or if you already have a pond/lake and maybe having an issue then i can come over and laook at the koi do a scrape and have a look under the microscope to determine what course of treatments will be necessary to cure the problem,

Went over to stone in stafford today as a guy had an issue turned out it was costia as he had introduced an un-quarantined koi to his pool and it had infected all his other prize gems, sorted it out after identifying the problem.

Just gonna start to do up my garden soon and want a water feature koi pond so will be racking your brains soon !!

No worries mate,

Do you have any specific size or any special shape?

How many fish do you want to add to it?

All are factors

No mate just standard square pond , but want to know things like how deep , how to add filters if needed where or how to fit pump and wiring ect

Not an Expert, but heard the deeper the better for Koi ?

But I am sure @bretttina will let us know, and guide you matey!

Regards
Mick

OK

The recommended minimum depth for a koi pond is 1m and with regards to filtration i will always recommend a bottom drain and again depending on size you may require 1 x 4 inch or several 2 inch or 4 inch bottom drains.

Here is a sketch of a set of two stock pools that i did for a friend of mine they were 5m x 3m x 2m deep both were independent from each others filtration system as he had imported koi coming in every few months, and wanted to use one as a quarantine pool and the other as a holding pool whilst he moved his stock in the shop
pondbuild.png

Notice i used 2 x 4 inch bottom drains in each pool , the reason for this was, firstly size and secondly the amount of stock he was holding in each pool , poo, unwanted food and debris all can have an impact on the quality of koi care, also on this build we didn't use a UV as the tanks were situated under a purpose built canopy and shaded from sunlight so the water did not go green,
One more thing i added an inlet for when it rained so natural water would pour through the pond on a regular basis giving a natural feel to the water for the koi.

Total build cost was £9k

The first thing i learn't was "you are not a koi keeper you are water keeper" and this is so true, a healthy water system is a happy koi system and each will complement each other .

You will need to calculate the size of your pond in volumes of water here is a handy little volume calculator Volume Calculator and once you have done this then you can start to look for a suitable pump for your new pond, when choosing a pump say your pond volume is 10,000 liters you will need a 12,000 liter pump as you should be turning the water through the filtration system once every hour any less and you won't have the water removing toxins from it's self,

When filling a new or existing pond you should use a reverse osmosis system, koi are very sensitive to rust and other chemicals that are in ordinary tap water and can kill them, hence why we used rain water on the two tanks shown above.

Your filter is all dependant on your stocking levels, the more koi/fish the bigger your filter should be, you can never have too big a filter,

One more thing, airation, koi need to breath and if you only have a few koi in a large pond and have lots of natural oxygenating plants with a small water feature then you will be fine but if you have lots of koi then you will need to add an airator with bubbles that will help oxygenate the water.

I hope i've covered most things any more quests please feel free to ask.

Brett.

Have you got a size/dimension of the pond yet?

If you can give me the dimensions I can sketch something out for you and have a look at what you would need to keep it a healthy environment

This thread is tremendous!!

The info and pic`s are really cool ...Thanks . I love to go sea fishing and this thread stirred my interest and real glad I took a peek.
Them Koi are really beautiful and the pond built is great. Well done Mate!!

Did you send it with a net? lol

Just had a good read through this thread :) Nice thread mate keep it up :)

Cheers mate i intend to,

When i was younger it's all i wanted to do, a bit weird really :Fish: but now i can see why i was so passionate about it at such an early age and 30 years on i'm still the same.

I wish i could be a koi !!!!! Sorry lol.

Just cleaned out the pond today and wanted to let everyone know about the pit falls of cleaning,

OK , when you want to clean your pond DO NOT EVER REMOVE THE FURRY WEED THAT IS STUCK TO YOUR LINER/FIBERGLASS

The reason being is that this is an eco system that will be beneficial to your pond, it hold good bacteria and also living organisms that your koi will need to have for natural food, it may look nasty but it's actually a good habitat.

At this time of year everyone is complaining about green water... or pea soup type water , this is actually a great time for young fish to thrive, as there are lots of natural foods to enjoy and make them grow nice and healthy for the winter months,

But

Unfortunately most koi owners don't like the pea soup as they can't sit outside and enjoy their pool/pond as they cant see their prized koi.

So if you want to rid your pond of this nasty green water simply add a UV after the filter and within 7 days your water will be crystal clear, but like i say this will have counter effects on the colors and habitat that your koi live in.

@DirkyDanglar PM has been answered mate

Just in the process of moving house now and moving all the koi, this can be a very stress full time for Koi and can also be very dangerous when moving koi especially older ones, so with that in mind i have decided to leave them where they are for now and the new owners have agreed to let me use the pond until i am ready to move them into their new home :) but this won't be for a good while as their new home hasn't even been built yet

Up dates to come over the coming months on the new build :)
