Hi guys.

I'm about to join the gym ....... again, really need to sort my physical appearance out and i'm getting sick of being overweight

I've been browsing the net looking for what supplements would be best to use to start. I'm fine with managing my own diet and eating habits but i'm looking at the possibility of using green tea extract capsules and protein for a boost.

Has anyone got any advice on what to use? Are all brands of green tea extract the same? where can i buy them??

Thanks in advance....

Why? Drink green tea. Eat lean meat.

See - A balanced diet - Live Well - NHS Choices as a starting point for healthy eating.

Watch what you put on food - reduce salt, sugar, fat etc. Up the fruit and veg. Grab oats. Grab fibre even if it's potatoes with the skins on.

Greens and water/fruit juice.

I'm sure this list will be extended by other members :)

After a lifetime of getting continuously changing and conflicting dietary advice I have found that there are only four rules you need to follow.

1. Eat a balanced diet. Forget supplements.

2. Be aware of your calorie intake.

3. Exercise.

4. Ignore the Internet. 99% of the advice you'll get is snake oil and flim-flam, and life's too short to spot the other 1%.

(of course this post might come under rule 4)

Don't be like a bloke I see regularly in the gym I've been at for about 18 months. He spends hours a week, probably about seven, on elliptical machines, bikes, treadmill... Then in the changing room each time he finishes he drinks a bottle of sugar-filled "sports drink". He's never looked any different, he probably can't understand why he's not losing weight.

Most supplements are a waste of money really, there are probably some that do something but diet is the most important. you can lose more fat in the 23 hours a day you spend out of the gym if you're diet is right.

I think whey was doing something for me as my recovery time seems to have increased without it but I refuse to pay VAT on it plus whatever the shops stuck on before it was VATable.

As the others have said a good diet is the main thing, get your training kickstarted before supplementing.

It all depends on what your goals are, supplements are not a waste of time but you need to be ready to take them first. Protein for instance you can get from lean meats but do you know how much chicken and steak you need to eat to get the same quantity you can get in a decent shake such as cyclone? its insane, but as the other guys have said dietary discipline is the first port of call, then when you are starting to see gains supplement.

If you are just on a weightloss journey eat clean and get moving, do as much cardio as you can, work out your calorific requirements for weight maintenance and weight loss and start from there, when you start seeing the pounds come off you will soon start wanting more and I guarantee it will be the start of something great :)
