LATEST ‘SUPERFOOD’ MAPLE SYRUP COULD HELP BEAT DIABETES

Source

LONG a favourite on American breakfast tables, maple syrup is being hailed as the latest superfood to help treat diabetes and other ailments.

Research shows that the sweetener contains health-giving properties which could also help fight cancer.

Scientists believe maple syrup is a “one-stop shop” for beneficial compounds, which have anti-oxidant properties more usually associated with other so-called superfoods like berries, tea, red wine and flax seed.

By analysing the syrup, most of which is produced in Canada and made by boiling down sap from the maple tree, they identified 54 compounds – twice as many as the syrup was thought to contain.

Further research showed five of the compounds were unique to maple syrup. Scientists from the University of Rhode Island found that several of the syrup’s polyphenol, or water- soluble, compounds inhibited enzymes which convert carbohydrates to sugars. This discovery raises the prospect of a new way of managing type 2 diabetes.

The research team also discovered that many of the anti-oxidant compounds, which help slow the ageing of the body’s cells, are not found in other natural sweeteners.

Dr Navindra Seeram, who led the study, said the “sheer quantity and variety” of compounds in maple syrup made it special. She added: “We don’t know yet whether the new compounds contribute to the healthy profile of maple syrup.

But we do know that the sheer quantity and variety of identified compounds with documented health benefits qualifies maple syrup as a champion food.

“We found a wide variety of polyphenols. In preliminary studies, maple syrup had a greater enzyme-inhibiting effect compared to several other healthy plant foods such as berries.

“By 2050, one in three people will be afflicted with type 2 diabetes and more people are looking for healthier diets. So finding a potential anti- diabetic compound in maple syrup is interesting for the scientific community and the consumer.”

So this explains why the yanks are fat fooks but don't suffer from diabetes, because they eat maple syrup with there 20 pan cakes ;)

lol yeah!!!

What they should have said is that there are noted health benefits to be had from ORGANIC Grade B Maple Syrup.

But not from the sort of commercial over-processed Maple Syrup shite that the average American paints onto their pancakes!

That garbage has already had any natural goodness beaten and bullied out of it by the time the consumer gets it.

I hate when they put articles like this in the paper without properly looking into the detail... lazy journalism just to fill a bit of space on a quiet news day.

a general statement, that maple syrup beats diabetes is completely nonsense.

5 year old thread lol

True. I presume he was clocking, but at least he made a valid point which makes a change from the usual clocking tosh.
