Okay guys, finally decided to go cold turkey and quit smoking. So far its been about 27 hours without a cigarette and have to admit it feels rather well good.

I'm 28 now and picked up smoking whilst at Uni, like every smoker never admitted that I was hooked and used my small habit as an excuse that it wasnt a habit. Now I smoked around 3-10 cigarettes a day so thought I wasnt a heavy smoker but the truth is if you're smoking daily you are an addict so address it.

I'm determined to see this through and give up this horrible habit of mine. Was just wondering if theres any members on here who have gone through the same thing and wished to offer some advice?

giving up is all about self control and is damn hard! good luck with it though

things that are difficult and wanna make you smoke, well things I found anyways so try avoid if you do any of these

the pub, not so bad nowadays considering non smoking rule but a pint goes hand in hand with a ciggy

a cup of tea after a meal, you just want a ciggy with it

watching tv and someone smoking, made me feel like smoking more than watching others on the street!

I have quit and has been about 15 years though on the odd occasion I still get an urge. But I can control my urges now so not a problem anymore.

Congratulations
You are now a non smoker.
You have decided that you no longer wish to smoke.
The rest is easy.

I smoked in excess of 20 per day for over 30 years and never wanted to quit.

Then one day I decided that I was fed up of smoking and quit.
That was 10 years ago.

But don't forget to manipulate the sympathy that friends and family will give you.

Ive just done a year now no weed or cigs :) miss the weed and the pipe etc is just not the same :(

good luck..

Been fag free for 15 years ,i put a ittle weight on but started bike riding and exercising so sorted that, you have just increased your lif expectancy `well done that man !`

Well done mate keep it up, I hate smoking lol! Mom smokes like 40 a day and its vile!

Well done, keep it up and you'll soon start to see the benefits. I quit about 15years ago. Told my wife on the sunday night that I'd smoked my last cigarette (no-one believed me, that just made me more determined) and chucked the rest of the packet away. Went to work the rest of the week every day with no cash in my pocket so I couldn't buy any and avoided going to the pub for a few weeks so I wouldn't be tempted. After the first 7-10 days the physical cravings for nicoteen stopped, after that it's all in your head.

i quit about 5 months ago just before news years eve

first few days i found relatively easy

then the mental and physical withdrawal symptoms kicked in

i felt really messed up for about 4 - 6 weeks

up and down, depressed, comfort eating, irritated, chatty

so now month 5 and i have put a stone on in weight but i do about 70 miles a week on my mountain bike lol

also suggest u go down the gym or run 2 or 3 times a week as it will help keep the temporary depression away

i dont agree that the withdrawal symptoms disappear within a week, if that was the case everyone would quit

it is a very long hard road and you need to prepare yourself

i'm coming up to a year for me. I'm 35 now and had smoked since i was 17ish. Heavy smoker at times but down to 5 or 6 a day at the end.

One day, i thought 'enough is enough' and chucked half a pack of tabs in the bin. Not touched them since, not even 1 drag. For me, i found it suprisingly very easy. I'd occasionaly fancy a tab but it went away a few mins later. i had no real effects at all. i wish i'd done it years ago.

Think of it as every day that passes is a milestone - if you ever even have a single DRAW on a cig - you've failed and it's back to the start again. a year for me and i've not loooked back - even now when i'm out on the lash i fancy one but i think to myself "i've come this far - why ruin it"

Keep it up, think of the money and how much easier it is to climb stairs!!

What a fantastic set of guys, thank you ever so much for your support. Has been tremendous reading through the posts and has only reinforced my will to quit. This is the longest I've been without a cigarette in years, dont think I've ever gone two days without one even when I've been ill.

As mentioned here, I've had the odd mate say yeah right etc. And its made me more determined. Like most I have my weaknesses and my main weakness is driving and smoking, especially the first one in the morning. It became a routine so much so it feels real odd.

But am determined and anyone on here who still smokes and maybe wants to quit also, trust me its the best thing you can do. Just keep people around for support as you will need it no matter if you're a casual or heavy smoker.

Only down sides I've noticed so far is, have got a much smaller fuse with people and am irritable but hopefully within 3-4 weeks the nicotine will begin to leave my body and then I'll just have to fight with the psychological aspects.

Keep your stories coming guys, it really is very helpful and inspirational.

I could bang on & on about the losers saying "I enjoy my cgts", "a meal doesn't taste the same without it", "I smoke to help me relax", "I smoke to help me concentrate", "I smoke when socialising", "I smoke when bored" etc, etc, etc.

Nicotine addicts will make up any bullshit excuse to justify their vile habit.
They tell themselves over & over that they enjoy it, and they are that weak willed, that they believe it.

The fact is that they are scared to go a few hours without the adult version of a dummy tit stuck to their lips is testament to the hold that the cancer stick has over their weak minds.

Listen people...no-one has ever, in the history of the universe, woken up screaming in pain because they haven't had a smoke.

Who in their right minds wants to be a slave to a small stick of dried out herb rolled in a bit of paper?

Yep, I'm an ex-smoker, I've been there, done that, coughed up rainbow coloured throat oysters...but no more, I gave up cold turkey over 5 years ago.

The smell of stale smoke on your hair, clothes etc signifies to me that you are a weak individual.

If you're standing in the pissing rain & gale force wind outside your pub/club/office/public building and someone walks past you sniggering...that'll be me.

imranrasool...well done on having the balls to kick the habit.
You'll no doubt have your mates trying to tempt you with a cgt, this is to be expected, as smokers are scared to lose another member, and they'll try to entice you back into their flock (yes, like sheep).

It would be a shame for you to go this far and ruin your progress, so don't be tempted.

If you feel the urge, take a deep breath, then when you fill your lungs, try to take some more air in & hold it for a few seconds & exhale slowly.
Also, if you feel like having a smoke, take a drink of water instead.
The urge will pass as quickly as it came, and it will lessen after each time.

You are a non-smoker m8, don't let yourself down.

Good luck mate hardest part is dismissing the craving but if you can resist that then your well on the way to being a Non Smoker, keep it up.

I stopped after 34 years was on 20 / day the cigars but ended up on as many of them. I finally went with a close friend who had to give up because of a Heart Attack, and we went to Nonsmoker at a local hospital and had Acupuncture in our ears.
Neither of us touched one since, feel better, better off, best thing i ever did with and for my friend.

as for the short fuse bit just learn that when you feel yourself getting mad just take 2 seconds an realise it's not like you, it's not you doing it. You got to learn to let things wash over you a bit more than normal!

Each day is futher down the path away from the tabs - you don't want to go back to the begining!

im off the weed 5 yrs now, the need for smoking dies after a few days however the want never leaves you. you need to be strong keep going m8. well done. phone the nhs smoke helpline m8 they have got meetings etc to help, my dad was a heavy smoker and they helped him a few years ago too.

Am absolutely stunned at the support here guys. Havent had this amount of support from my friends, most havent even been bothered instead saying lets see how I get through a saturday night out with the lads. Typical I know. Fact is I'm quite enjoying taking the piss out of them back.

As I'm not the one giving into the nicotine. I'm telling that mofo well and truly to go where the son dont shine and it feels good. The cough I currently have doesnt feel good and from my research is expected as the lungs decide to go through a recycling phase.

And Seedy-r0m talk about hitting the nail on the head, it is obvious you are an ex smoker. As you know the amount of bs excuses a smoker such as myself will make to justify why I need a smoke. Its been a few days and the physical side of the craving is starting to die down. Its the psychological part I need to deal with, as there are so many situations where lighting up is a lifetime habit now just have to kick it.

I havent even come close to slipping and am very very happy as feel alot happier for it, not to mention the family. My mom is over the moon and that means alot to me.

Just wanted to say well done to everyone here who has quit, especially peeps like stefblak who have kicked the weed habit. As it happens I was a heavy weed smoker back at college, and downgraded to cigarettes to get off the weed and been trying to downgrade ever since.

But this is the first time I decided enough is enough and got off it. And feel the better for it.

Just want to say a huge thank you to everyone on here who has replied and given their words of wisdom and support, its nice to be in a community where people care enough to provide support to a somewhat stranger.

Said it before and will say it again. Best forum anywhere.

i did it cold turkey, but what i did was still go out with the smokers and chat like i used too with them but not have a tab. you may think why?? and i will tell you, my theory is, if you can stand around smokers from day one without having a tab, the urge is there but have the will ower to say no, then you will be able to quit quicker and for longer, i havnt had a tab for over 3 years now.

also, dont quit for anyone else, i tried this but because i was forced to quit, i didnt, i quit when i felt the time was right and that is maybe how i got my will power.

good luck mate and think of the pounds you'll be saving!!

stopped 30th sept last year, the litle guy in your head will tell you to go for a fag every time you have a minute to spare, he does this every ten minutes for the first few days, then it turns into hours, then a couple of hours, then twice day, until he goes way completely and it dont bother you at all. I am now fag free and go to the gym every day. Stick with it. I can even get drunk now without it bothering me, in fact when I am drunk, I am really anti-smoking lol.
