PC stuck in restart loop (win XP Home)

hi guys and girls. After a hard power off my pc will not boot
into windows, i get the xp loading screen and just when you
should get the blue welcome screen it reboots over and over.
i thought it might have been a file problem but when i put in the
XP disk it hangs after it has examined the configuration of the
hard drives with a black screen.its a giagabyte mobo with a P4
3 gig processor, 6 hard drives and a 7800 gt graphics card,
any help would be great.

Hello mate, I recently had a similar problem. I used a recovery disk to restore factory settings and re-installed windows. I didnt have much on the hard drive so losing data wasnt an issue, but its one option. Im sure someone will have another idea. Hope that helps.

You probably want to see why its rebooting itself over and over again. As it is starting up press F8 and this will give you various options such as reboot using last know good configuration. Try that and if that does not work try going into safe mode, than right click > My computer > Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > untick automatically restart.

Than restart and it will stop rebooting itself and give you a blue screen with ' stop error of some kind' tell us what that error.

IF you could read the message on the blue screen than you may be able to find the cause of the problem. Try pressing the pause/break key as it flashes past.

Try selecting "Last known good configuration" from the boot menu.

Have you installed anything before this problem occured?

there is no blue screen.

I think the only option you have left is to do an OS repair using the Windows XP install disk.

press f8 while booting up and this will give you some options 1 of the options will be to DISABLE AUTOMATIC RESTART ON SYSTEM FAILURE,that way next time you reboot it will go to the blue screen of death and give you a error code witch will look like this 0x00000008 then google the error code to find out wot it is.

when your pc reboots over and over again it is usually a crash fault,? work then try removing the memory and replacing it ,
if that dont work then

try removing the battery and resetting the csmos

usually fixes it

as for pressing a f button try f4

failing that disconnect all hard drives bar master ? then reboot

thanks for help guys i got it sorted in the end.
i just kept rebooting with the xp disk in and finaly
got in to the recovery mode and done a chkdsk
it found a few errors.

because ive just tryed it and it dont do any thing for me.

I've had the same thing..

I'm sorry to say I've had the same issue when I fitted a new motherboard and re-installed then updated via MS Site. I can guess that you've got a dodgy copy (I had but I've bought XP now) and you've recently picked up some updates from Microsoft. These know your XP version is a copy and thats why its restarting. You can either wipe the entire drive, re-install and only install Service pack 2 then disable updates or install a second or new hard drive install XP and install Service Pack 2 only then disable updates, connect your old drive and copy your data from C:\Documents and Settings\ .. onto the same area on your new drive - just look for your username under the documents and settings. If you goto Tools, Folder Options and View , check Show Hidden files - you e-mail should be listed under C:\Documents and Settings\Keith\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook - mine is obviously listed as Keith.

ive had the same issue with a original OEM xp that come with the computer 2weeks ago,i formated my computer it was working great i went to microsoft update installed all the updates and rebooted then it all went to pot LOL computer kept rebooting so i done a system restore before the updates were installed and it worked fine again,but automatic updates were on but when i relized it was to late automatic updates was asking me to reboot computer so i did and it f??cked up again.

so now ive done a restore and turned automatic update off and all is ok again,so there must be a dogdy update this month,thats all i can think off.

my pc did this and when i got it fix the guy told me it was the ram stick that had poped out, sould the same thing as mine.

This answers a bit late but Ive had this exact same problem. I used the xp disk to get me into the recovery console. Then once there in i searched the commands list and found the command "FIXBOOT" this command wrote a new boot sector to the disk and xp started up perfectly afterwards. Better late than never i suppose.
