i am on telewest (virgin media) i have noticed my news service speed drop from a constant 10mb to less than half of that....i always swore by cable in that it always maintained the speed you pay for....i have been looking into this and i found this on my news service news page.....

We are getting many reports that Pipex (a UK isp) has begun aggressively throttling download speeds for heavy users. This is affecting other usenet services as well and is not localised to Astraweb. Please consider using another broadband provider that does not throttle or contact Pipex to lodge a complaint.

I think it is about time we take a stand and start complaining to our isps about this....i dont want to go into a debate about the wrongs and rights of people using cloned modems or using mutiple cloned modems...this problem is inherent in the system and adsl does not suffer from this....Basically WE are being cheated...they do not state in adverts that they will shape your connection speed if you download at top speed. MAKE A STAND, i am going to complain to my isp now and i am also interested to know in this thread of anyone else experiencing this throttling.

PLEASE CAN THIS BE MADE A STICKY....i feel that this is only going to get worse.

i have to agree that is what they are doing ;( very sneaky. ntl news server here is still 1.1MB/sec but paid news server (newsdemon) is at half speed ...

yeah...but nthell newsservers are crap...shit completion and retention...thats why people pay for a service.

Hiya.
ADSL does suffer from throttling, I know at least BT (residential and business) and Tiscali use this. Part of the 'fair use policy'..
Its mainly to keep people from downloading huge files at peak times, and is referred to as traffic shaping. When someone is pulling full bandwidth they cause a lot of traffic and it causes a lot of latency for other users on the same network, even if they are using a little bit of bandwidth. So ruins online gaming etc
Not that I agree with this of course...I think ISPs are a victim of their own success here, if you offer a 8/10/20 meg service you should expect people to use it.
Its like download caps, offer a 8 meg connection and then cap you at 8Gb. Doesnt take Carol Vordeman to work out how long you are gonna be downloading flat out before you hit that limit!

lol yep.

ntl retention has all of a sudden dropped to about ten days. strange that a? :)

might be something to do with 20MB coming up. i cant imagine they'd be able to offer it unless heavy downloaders are capped? just a thought

Sorry...i was reffering to people using hacked modems, adsl does not suffer from that....however, you are right they do cap you...but you know that before you take on the service...even now, virgin media do not tell you that you will be throttled if you use the big stick they give you....its a cop out....WERE GETTING THE BUMRUSH HERE !!!!

The sad fact is that you will always get people who kick the arse out of everything - when your ISP offers you a 10 meg download they do not expect you to be downloading at 10Mb 24/7 behave yourself.

Fair use means exactly that, play fair and you will not have a problem - there are guys out there with multiple cloned modems / subbed modems who do nothing but download all day and night, Xbox games, latest movies, albums you name it, they download it.

There is a finite amount of bandwidth that needs to be shared in an area and someone who leathers the arse out of it ruins it for everyone else (as usual).

How many times have you read on this forum about JoeBloggs with 3 cloned modems downloading at 30 meg from newsgroups? These are the guys causing problems, they take more than the ISP's could ever imagine having to supply, and also ruin the service for their neighbours.

It is just greed and unacceptable in a reasonable world.

whoa i wonder what bee got under ur bonet

dudes with multiple hacked modems do seem a tad greedy.
But i bet there are more people with paid subs that nail the ass out of their service. i know when mine was paid, i felt i had the right to nail my moneys worth, especially at £35 a month!!

and with 20meg coming soon, surely, the CC's expect crazy downloads... what else is 20meg good for?
its like buying a loaf of bread, but can only have 1 slice a day.
well... i want more!... not too much tho :)

As i said.........Dont offer a service you cant give under ANY circumstance....cloned modems are a minority....if they can roll out 20mb and are looking to go to 50mb then the system can handle it.....dial up used to be 56k over the phone line...then they invented adsl...now you can go 8mb (if your living in the exchange itself)........dont be fooled by them...WE ARE GETTING THE BUMRUSH still!!!.

You are effectively getting what you are paying for and to expect more is frankly, unrealistic !

Granted the advertising is misleading (at best) but if you really want guaranteed performance then you are into leased line territory which will cost you considerably more than £35 per month !
