hi there

my son's xbox is haveing problems reading all the disk, we have tried cleaning it but without much suckcess, now for my question what type of drive can i use to replace the old one thats playing up, and is it easy.

The easiest option is to replace the drive with another Xbox 1 drive. The samsung is probably best for reading most media. I also believe the Thompson is okay aswell. Avoid the Philips drive.

Replacing the drive is just a case of opening the box, removing a few torkx screws and replace the dvd-rom drive.

Yeah the Samsung drive is the best (and probs more expensive coz its most sought after lol)
From my recollection the Thompson drives were not too bad, but picky with media type.

As Purity says, they're a piece of pi$$ to change, and I'm sure there are peeps that have installed regular IDE PC drives in there too, but that's a whole different ball game :)

now for my next question, where is the best place to get a Samsung drive from apart from ebay as i would like to replace it with a new drive not second hand

I don't think you'll find a new one, unless you buy a brand new xbox and take the DVD drive out.......but you might not get a Samsung or Thompson drive and why would you do that anyway?

If it is a reading issue then your probably best getting a new laser for the DVD-ROM drive and replacing your existing laser. It's a shame cos I have just binned two working samsung lasers!

If you want the easy option then buy a second hand unit and swap the drives.

Yep samsung drives are the best but I noticed the latest version of the xbox one comes with a toshiba drive which is exactly the same as the samsung. I cant think of the exact site address but I think one good cheap site is consolemods.co.uk but I might be wrong.

is there a tut on how to take it apart or are they easy to work out

I've two xboxs and they both seem to read dvd-rw, dvd-r and dvd+r. They can't read CDR, can can of the xbox DVD drives read them?

yes the samsung drives can read CDRs, the philips doesn't, not sure about the Thomspon, i think this might aswell.

I think you have two philips drives, and they are the worst for reading disks unfortunately

The samsung drive in mine (v1.6) wont read cdr's but does dvd+r fine. not tried any other type of disc.

That's strange. I've not come across a samsung that won't read CDRs. Maybe it is the media I am using?
