I put this in general chat as it's up for discussion. Last year 11 horses had to be destroyed during the Cheltenham festival and they have had to destroy one today, the first day.

What do you peeps think? is it bordering on cruelty?

Here some extracts from "This unsporting life"

Previous estimates – even by animal protection groups such as Animal Aid – have suggested a maximum figure of 300 annual equine deaths. Our new investigation shows that around 375 horses who are entered into races each season die from their injuries; or they are killed because they are considered of no further commercial value, even though they are young enough to continue racing. However, this total is almost certainly short of the true figure. This is because our data is drawn from the Official Form Book, which does not list all deaths

Reasons for horses being destroyed include broken legs, back, neck and pelvis; fatal spinal injuries, exhaustion, heart attack, and burst blood vessels in the lungs.

To the 375 racing casualties must be added the far larger, but unrecorded, number of ‘inferior specimens’ who are disposed of annually before they ever get to race – and the animals who are killed at the end of their racing careers, instead of receiving a properly-funded retirement. These victims probably total several thousand annually.

This report concentrates on the racing casualties. About 30% of the 375 annual victims die on the racecourse itself. This is an extraordinarily high figure given that the 59 British courses each stage, on average, a mere 12 racing days every year.

While some 30% of annual fatalities occur during, or immediately after a race, the remainder are killed because of injuries received in training, or after being assessed by their owners as no-hopers.

The four most hazardous of all the country’s courses are run by racing’s own governing body, the Jockey Club. These are Cheltenham, Aintree, Warwick and Carlisle. From just 54 days racing at Cheltenham, there were no fewer than 21 on-course deaths.

i voted cruel coz for a start they get whipped now if i was to whip the jockey like they whip the horse im sure he wouldnt be fecking laughing. And also the amount deaths from the sport is far too high. Any is too high actually!

This is a bit off topic but still on cheltenham has anyone found the jonny vegas podcast that was on teletext today he said he was onto a winner at the races

Horse Racing

Never mind the whipping, what about the shooting when the poor horses break a leg.

think im gonna get a bit of flack for this ,,,but they are only horses and befor anyone says all things should be equal, think about what your saying ,,if the horse dosent like it it should evolve into an itelagent enough spicies to take over the world and start racing us round a track under the whip, at risk of death.

Yes your going to get some flack :)
With spelling like that they should run you around a track while they whip you.
By your own criteria you do not deserve to be treated well either ?.

I think any sport where animals die for no reason is cruel and should be stopped.

I wouldn't have a problem if the animal was eaten though, I just cannot stand waste.

surely in this day and age they can make these courses safer without spoiling the racing ? you don't get 21 athletes dying at the Olympics

Sorry for beeing dyslexic

I would only care if its my horse That fell If i have money on it and if its not Woot ive got a better chance of winning more coin

but than again im a twat

I dont think horse racing in cruel. Accidents happen in all of the species on this earth. I would say if a horse did not want to run even though beaten with a whip it would'nt. Enough of this nanny state people take risks every day live and live, so get on with it

The driver chooses to do motorsport

just because people dont agree with your opinion doesnt mean there opinion is "shit". And when you quote someone then post a reply underneath it that generally means your replying to what they have said!

and it doesnt work when you edit your post later on :)

Horse racing Cruel?

Absolutely guys!

Taming and training and animal to help in farming etc is OK. The animal is an asset and should be treated with care and affection.

Making horses run around a track whilst jockeys continually whip them so people can get their gambling fix...terrible!

Take the jockeys and their whips off the horse's back and see how far it runs. Its as bad as dog fighting which is illegal.
