Hi all. I'm hoping there's somebody with a bit of expert knowledge here that might have some good news for me.

Basically I backed up my Thunderbird profile folder onto another drive before reinstalling on boot drive. For some reson, and I still don't know why as I've done it properly so many times before, it was the wrong folder :(

I backed up the AppData\Local profile folder instead of AppData\Roaming. Therefore I've lost 17 years worth of emails from a dozen or so accounts which I'm desperate to get back, and I'm not having a lot of luck with software I tried to recover.

So, the original drive was a Samsung 750 250GB Evo SSD with the usual drive partition structue of main NTFS Primary, System Reserved etc.

I deleted everything in here in Disak Manager until all I had was the black Unallocated Space.

Then I created a whole size Primary and quick formatted ready to be used as a game drive on new install - nothing has been written to it

I've tried deep scans with the likes of Recuva and even tried booting from a USB PE but Acronis Disk Director's recovery tool would only allow me to select the tiny allocated space left on the drive.

Has anybody got any other suggestions I could try myself please? Couldn't afford to anyway but not keen on the idea of sending it off somewhere.

Thanks

Were you able to recover your lost data?

I had similar situation before but luckily I realized and didn't write a new partition over it. Like you I tried using different recovery software and some scan better and others don't. I also used both Acronis and Recurva plus one more called TestDisk .

Best of luck to you!

Thanks mate. I had to cut my losses unfortunately. Just about anything else I could've replaced but hey ho, we live and learn (hopefully)

In future google Hiren Boot CD... It has lots of tools that will recover your file after format of the drive...

Was the 1st thing I went then hunted down the unofficial latest as it doesn't exist any longer

Ahh good to hear. I've also learned my mistake last time and now have multiple copies of data that's crucial or cherished pictures I can't afford to lose.

When you delete anything, it doesn't actually delete. Even if you format a drive it doesn't delete anything. It simply removes the first pointer from the drive, so your drive cannot be found properly.

Code:
You don't have permission to view the code content. Log in or register now.

That's get data back, it's a very good recovery program, you'll need double the space of the original drive to recover it.

Thanks mate. I'll use that should I need to in future. For now I've re-purposed the drive anyway. Even though I hadn't technically written anything back to the drive, I'd deleted previous partitions and created and formatted new ones, so the old partition table was a lost cause.

Anyway, I'm over it now...... honestly...... I'm OVER IT! 😭 [VectorZ sobs uncontrollably into his pillow]

The above program will still recover it even if you've done that. Unless you've basically DBAN'd the drive then it can be recovered. For those that are not aware DBAN is a program that will destroy the drives structure ensuring it's not recoverable. Unless it's an SSD, as DBAN cannot securely wipe a SSD drive.

Wow is that still going? I used to use that years ago but sure it stopped working or something with one of the new versions

I used it only a couple of weeks ago, it backedup all my emails and accounts etc and restored them after a reinstall. That an ninite saves some time imo

VectorZ - regarding your emails, would they still be on server of your email provider ?? :: I'm with virgin media, and all my emails are available on the email section of their website

Thanks mate but no. They would've all been on various private servers over a span of years, but were all pulled down locally with Pop3 anyway.
