Experience with OVH servers

So finally getting round to this.
Been looking at server OVH:
Processor: Intel Xeon-D 1521 - 4 c / 8 t - 2.4 GHz / 2.7 GHz
Memory: 16GB
Disk: 4×4TB HDD SATA + 1×500GB SSD NVMe
Public network: From 500 Mbps
Private network: From 100 Mbps

Not bad price. The reason im asking is...... I do know my previous streaming provider was using them but was getting DDOS often then moved to:

After that there was no more down time by DDOS. WS is a more expensive and is outside my budget.

Please only reply with experience with OVH and WS.

You get what you pay for. Depends what you want to use the server for. OVH are based in Canada/France I believe. Provider I use was using OVH in France, but he had problems with them as well.

I presume you're after a VPS of some description? Might be worth looking at Orange hosting in Iceland, but again it comes down to price and what you want it for.

16TB of space seems a little overkill, are they in a RAID? 500GB SSD must be a massive OS

That is where the original Silk Road was hosted, so they're pretty decent. DDOS is something you're going to have to deal with, hide it behind cloudflare or similar, but again they'll rat you out in a second.

I know that Dream was hosted in Zimbabwe or somewhere similar in Africa. You can of course use bulletproof hosting as well, but again it's about ££.

My advice would be build your server how you want it. Image it, and get a backup, then you can move it as quick as needs be. In fact realistically for security purposes you need 2 servers. One for the front end, and one for the database in case some nefarious actor hacks it, or uses bruteforce attack.

Also a VPS can be imaged by the authorities without your knowledge as they will have access to the hypervisor, again this is a security thing you should consider between dedi or VPS.

You'll be running linux, you can harden it, but im not sure on your linux skills, or what hardening might block. But I would definitely think about hardening the server as a precaution. There are lots of guides on hardening a linux server. @Grimeire can likely offer some insight as well, he's got some mad linux skills

You shouldn't think of this as OVH servers you should link of this as a linux server as they are all pretty much the same regardless of who is hosting them.

What exactly are you trying to achieve? are you hosting content?

For security hardening most linux distributions have a built in firewall called IP tables. you can use this so that only ports that should be reachable are and not sure how you are accessing the VPS but I would also recommend changing the SSHD config to disable root access, disable password access and only use RSA keys. You can then access the VPS using a lower privileged user and escalate to root. If the VPS can be reached from the public then have a look at the auth logs and you will see for yourself while i recommend disabling root and password access.

I presume you mean sudo to root? This is a must, as it will ensure that it's much harder to pwn the server.

@Grimerie, I suspect it's going to be an IPTV server, but im not sure.
