Just run this command in telnet which will update and install whats needed

opkg update && opkg install -force-overwrite /tmp/*.ipk

Your using a vix image the only way you can get the opkg update working is to copy the opkg folder from a recent image to the one you have now.

This is not something i advice as with driver and kernel changes the plugins etc from the feeds will match the latest kernel and drivers these may not be suitable for your older image.
